I know this might be a strange question but I've never figured out how to cancel render in Max 5?

ehm , clicking cancel did it for me.
Strange if it doesnt work for you

little known, undocumented secret...

that button in the top left of your keyboard, the one thats marked "Esc"...

press it down, then release

to the previous poster. maybe he doesnt have the render progress panel set to display.
