Hello all,
Hey I was just wondering, I've been using the trial version of X64 for a few months now, and I 'm very happy with it, at the end of 6 months I guess its going to stop working, then, I don't know whats going to happen, is it going to give me the option of buying it, and how much will it be ??

I saw the OEM version on newegg for $139.00 which would be fine, but what I'm really wondering is, where is this going to go, is this kind of a dead end OS, some kind of experiment, when Vista comes out, will that be the end of X64, will I be able to upgrade to vista for a reasonable price ???

Thanx

Vista is the successor of XP and i don't think MS will put much effort beside maybe some service packs in XP after Vista has been released.
This does not keep you from using XP (32 or 64 bit) as long as you like and as long as it supports the hardware you need.
Personaly i plan to use my XP 32 and 64 bit installations as long as possible since i wasn't able to find any feature in Vista that would make it interesting for me to upgrade.
Cheers

Both :)
First the trial and then i needed more then one machine and bought it.
Currently i'm only using the finished release version not the trial.

Hey can I ask you a question, my time just ran out with the trial "in one hour your system will shut down" thanx microsoft for the huge warning, one hour...

Anyway, so I was thinking of getting the OEM version, my question is, will I have to do a full reinstall, or will it take something it needs from the OEM disk, I can't find any instruction on this anywhere...

On another note I was reading some vista info, and it seems that X64 won't upgrade to vista, so should I just wait for vista to be released, what do you think ?

I did not upgrade but made fresh installations with new licenses. The price for a new version wasn't worth the time and hassle with upgrading the beta for me.
As for Vista, i'll simply wait and see :)

Hey Srek,
now I'm really lost, is the OEM version the only version, or is there a retail version ?

"The price for a new version wasn't worth the time and hassle with upgrading the beta for me."

are you saying the price was so cheap, so expensive, sorry I don't get it, and how much time and hassle is it going to be for me, if I "upgrade" to X64 from X64, which I don't get anyway, I'm upgrading to the same version are'nt I, I just need to licence it, correct ??

Sorry for all these stupid questions...there's just not alot of info out there about it...

Can't answer all of that, but yes, OEM is the only version of x64, there is no retail or "Ultimate" edition or anything.

My situation is most likely not the same as yours. I'm using 64 bit systems mostly for testing purposes (CINEMA 4D 64 Bit). The process of upgrading from the beta to the final was so tedious here in germany that i couldn't be bothered with it and purchased new SB licenses of the release version. I never upgraded from a beta 64 Bit version to a final release and can't be of help to you here.

Thanx anyway Srek,

Ok I thought I would continue with this thread instead of starting a new one...

So I'm surfing around and found this...X64 for $72.00, at first I thought that can't be for real...but it is the feature merchant on pricegrabber.com here...

http://www.pricegrabber.com/p__Microsoft_Windows_XP_Professional_x64_Edition_OEM,__11995825/skd=1/search=oem+windows+x64

And here is the merchants page...

https://shop.edirectsoftware.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=16240

So what do you all think ???

Sounds a bit dodgy to me. Even the SB license (OEM) comes in a DVD like cover not in a simple sleeve. Also the price difference hints on either an illegal copy or maybe a debundled version (which might or might not be legal depend on local law).

PS *Note: The words "Not For Resale" are imprinted on the CD however it can legally be used for commercial and educational use. If MS takes a different approach to this you might be in trouble with online updates

It does sound alittle "too good to be true"...

I've always used pricegrabber, but have never used that online store before, it has a really good rating, I also checked some of the other software on their site, and it seems to be the correct price, so I just don't know...

first off besides the price that should make you wonder.. eDirect software lists the product
as "Microsoft Windows XP Professional (SP2) - 64 Bit".. XP Professional x64 is only up to
Service Pack 1. second.. XP x64 dosent come packaged that way.. as Srek said.. it comes
in a clear DVD case with the product key on the inside.

buy it from mwave.. they are one of the best online retailers.

Ya,
I think I'm going back to my original plan, and buy it from newegg.com, its the same price as Mwave.com, but mwave requires a hardware purchase, and the shipping at newegg is only $5 also, thanx for the help everyone...

Well just an update for anyone who was wondering what happens when the demo runs out, I ended up getting it from newegg.com, put the disk in, and went through "upgrade" it took about 30 min. and all works fine, I'm really happy I didn't have to reinstall, and kind of upset that there isn't any info on this anywhere, but all's well that ends well...
