This was just posted by NewTek: "We have just delivered the twelfth and final build in the "Open Beta" series designation to our Open Beta Group, and the next build they receive will be in the Release Candidate series. LightWave v9 is feature complete and optimizations and final fixes are in progress.

In conjunction with this milestone, we are also pleased to announce that concurrent with OB 12 and for the RC builds, our Open Beta Participants are now free to publicly discuss LightWave v9 (please note the Open Beta sections will still be private, as we still need to work with the Open Beta group for testing there, and will be reserving the sections for future use, as Open Beta programs will now be standard practice). We feel that the new features of LightWave v9 make this one of the biggest advancements in LightWave ever, and that with the commencement of the RC series, now is the time to share the excitement with the community at large."

This means anybody on the fence can ask about features and impressions from the beta testers. LightWave 9 ROCKS!

So now we are free to talk about it?

If you would like further clarification about the NDA, please visit the Open Beta forums and read the announcement there from Chuck. It should detail what parts of the NDA are now lifted.

...so one is free to ask I guess, but it seems there are still some restrictions of some sort.
Anyway, only 5 days left 'till the NDA is totally over ;)

I have been using Lightwave for several years. But I have used LW for spaceship and sci-fi work. I love LW for that. It is for that reason that I will never ditch LW! People have praised my output. I give Lightwave the credit for that. I think it's really much easier to produce nice renders than what I've seen in other packages. I mught use another package like Maya, Softimage, or Messiah for CA. But, only to support LW. The only reason that I'm even thinking about that is because I'm now looking to expand my 3D knowlege and get into character animation, and do some of my own long animations. From what I've seen in the past(I've been looking carefully into this) LW does do character animation, pretty well in fact, but it's approoach doesn't seem to be as clean as what I've seen in Messiah, Maya, or SI. Especially when you throw in hair(like Cinema 4: Hair plugin. WOW is it breathtaking)

I really don't like the idea of getting another software package. While there are certain advantages to doing that, it can add complexity to my workflow. So, I want to be very careful before I take this step. My question about v9 is what has Newtek done to improve character animation in this release of Lightwave? Or is this simply the version where the foundation was laid to do serious character animation in the future? That's all for now. Again, please, no flame wars. Just looking for information.

Unfortunately there are no additions to the ca tools in 9. However, the team seems to be completely aware of what needs sorting out (uv mapping is a big one for me) and you can rest assured that it will eventually get the attention it needs. When that will actually happen though...who knows. But it will happen.
