I don't understand this tutorial, please help.

Could someone explain even easier for me? It says I have to make a shell, where? inside the maya program? How do I create the shell? and where to put it?

This shell the author was speaking of is simply a duplication of the model, which he scaled up abit in every direction. He then went to Edit Polygons > Normals > Reverse. By that, this duplication has it's polygonfaces facing inwards (in games that means you now see through the surface). Apply a black shader to this duplication, then simply go to you Pane Menu and choose Shading > Backface Culling (you have to be in Shaded Mode for this, otherwise you can't set the Backface Culling option).

edit: uhmm, sorry - i think I had this browser window open for a while, did not refresh and therefore did not see the reply..

a shell in maya is a series of connected polygons that form one "unit"... You can have multiple shells within an object. When you create a standard polysphere it will contain only one shell, but if you cut this sphere right in the middle so that there is no connection left between the parts, you will end up with two shells...

Anyhow, in the tutorial he just duplicates the poly object, reverse the normals, scale it up a bit and assign a black shader to it - this will create this outline effect...
