hi all,

i've got to render an animation for TV output (PAL).

since i never did this before, i'm not quite sure about rendering to fields or not !

i remember some article, which advised rendering to full frames first and afterwards splitting those into fields during post.

so what am i to do ?! does maya's field rendering really suck ?
how about filename conventions when rendering to fields ? i will do my final composition on shake, any special issues to be aware of ?

I'd probably render full frames... you never know maybe you want to make some touch ups in post... I usually render for TV NTSC at the end.

my 2 cents

to be a little more detailed here:

so you work with full frames during compositing and only render your final composition to NTSC ?!

well, if this works without any flickering problems or such, i'll do so either ! :)

i would suggest rendering in full frames and leave it like that.
but be sure to render with motion blur if you have fast motion in your images.
if you dont, you will get flickering for sure.

you might wanna think about rendering the motion blur in a seperate .iff file and assign it later in the command line (using blur2d.exe). like that you can alter the length to fit you needs and you can do your composites as usual without moblur artifacts (which are quite likely in maya rendering :)

hope it helps (thats the way i work for TV since 4 years now)

I guess the thing is not that simple:

I output to NTSC 720X480, so I render at least at 720X480 full frame (this way you can use sinlge frames as stills to "show" around or you can do some post work like correcting colour and so on...) after I import the single frames (or you can also save Maya output as uncompressed quicktime or avi) into after effects\ final cut pro\premiere and render the whole clip as tv ntsc.

I render in Maya at 24fps the output will be at 30fps (29.97 or something like it) and it will output with fields (lower first) 3:2 pulldown as: sswws.

I know PAL runs at 25fps but I have no idea about the actual framerate and the settings for the 3:2 pulldown

Hopefully someone in europe will be able to help.

ok, having the ability to show stills 'full frame' makes sense. but i don't see why that 3:2 pull-down is needed ?! can't one simply render 25 fps in maya, composite and then render out to PAL fields ?

i might sound lame on this, but i have no experience with it !

just render 25 fps for PAL..

one last question !

how to render a separate blur-pass and re-apply it during post ?
can't find anything about it in the manuals.

maybe check 'keep motion vectors' ?!

ahhh, yeah ... i got it ! thanks a lot ppl !

and a good tip at the side since they forgot to mention that until version 4 at least:

you can have a seperate color and motion vector file for the blur (which is e.g. the way to get moblur on your particles)

the blur2d command has 2 more commands:
-v and -c
which specifies the color file (image = -c) and the file containing the motion blur vectors (-v)..

with that you can render you ultra high res stuff without blur, then render a very low res version with very low AA samples and motion vectors and then use the second file to blur the first one..

VERYYYY cool :)
