im trying to create a house fly... in 3dsmax... how could i create a material for the eyes? it has that rainbow thing.... if u know wat i mean?

try a gradient ramp with a lot of colors in the reflection slot and a fallof in the refraction slot, youll have to lower the values to somethin like 30 for reflection and 15 for refraction.
Well maybe not perfect but its a beginning :)

yes you should also use a bump map as above , and as a reply to my own answer you might wanna move the fallof ramp to the glossiness slot, i havent tried it but i think it might be better

A rainbow spherical environ map in the specular slot might be cool.

hmm thats wierd,.... it wasnt showing in the browser.. i had to right click get the url copy paste in my browser to view it... anywayz... yea thats kinda what i was looking for.. can u explain how u did that>? or if u dont mind can u share that material?

It's really simple.

Use the the Stained glass filter in photoshop. delete the cells inside the borders and create a new layer.
move the new layer down and fill it with a color of your choise... for instance: red. Then paint in some details. Flies often have some broken "facettes" (sp) in their eyes.... so paint those as darker spots.

use the "cell" layer to make the bump and specular maps. Just add a low strenght gausian blur... and fiddle a bit with it.
