View Full Version : Maya Flash
Spliff_Richards 01-09-2003, 12:33 PM When will we get to render to Flash files from Maya? Is there a pluggin out there maybe or what? I was trying out Plasma and I think it rocks(other than the Max interface of course:)) I suggest Alias Wavefront does something for us that are not making movies:) No offence.

plasma is not a plug , its a standalone vector based 3d app from discreet
-oh also yes plasma is very good . but i have only played with it for a few hours to make some flash logos for my site. but yeah it seems like a stripped down 3dsmax with flash output but yeah what the hell do i know?...

well, i don't know flash that much, but doesn't it read shockwave3d input ? if so, get the shockwave3d exporter for maya from A/Ws' website !
get it here ! =) (http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/products/maya/sw3d.shtml)

hmm flash and shockwave are related but very different , plus the outputs from maya in shockwave format are not editable while a true vector based renderer will let you take it into flash and edit it and get it how u want it .

Quick question.
How hard would it be to write a self-made script that exports the renders straight to .swf ??
If i look at cambridge's swiffworks , the program forces the user to use their shaders and stuff for the cellshadin and stuff.
And although i haven't used the program before, i can't really state a verdict over that piece of software.
There are shaders at the moment (and before too) that allows cell-shaded image renders close to ressembling flash vector style.
Just wondering if its possible to write an own exporter :)
As it comes in higher demand now that broadband is taking over internet and people are bored with flat 2d stuff !

The problem is to convert the image vector-like to real vector. In flash this caction is called "trace bitmap" but you can't do a script in flash (as a mel in maya) to trace the bitmapS.

Okay.....i guess the only way we can get Flash support in maya is to kidnap someone at A|W and put him/her or them on the Swift production pipeline :)

I don't know a thing about how flash works. But i've always been curious to know if it was possible to import an image sequance of say jpeg renders for a frame by frame playback.
eh ?

I think the biggest chance of this is if David Gould finishes the illustrate plug in for maya.
I remember way back in the day of the kinetix forum he was on, I used a beta (trial) copy of Illustrate for 3dsmax, it was great.
Now I just checked his website and it says coming soon..
Illustrate for Maya.....so I guess if there is enough demand for it, it will be out sooner then later.

yea it is possible....but you better hope you have all broadband people looking at your site, mixed with a very fast server.
You can do it, but it would be the same size as if you used a Jpeg compression on an avi or quicktime.

You can wait a whole lot longer for that..... that message has been there for more then a year.
Well, i'd rather see a Swift then an illustrate plugin for Maya.
My opinion is that it's the most solid flash exporter on the market to date.
Lightwave , MAX already have their fun..... when will Maya be added to that list....?

I agree with CKerr, Illustrate is Maya's only hope for a defacto toon renderer!
Patrick Jean's Tomcat toonshader is the best one out there at the moment because of the simple fact that it's a post effect that uses Painteffects so no facing ratio issues.
www.toonshader.com
With that said it's got issues that don't really compete with the output I've seen from Illustrate!
The senior accounts rep at Digimation told me a few weeks back that David Gould is slaving away on Lord of the Rings and won't be available until it's over - factor in a good ammount of R&R and we're looking to having to wait at least another year and a half until this plugin is available! Yikes!
That just plain sucks seeing as the other packages are starting to catch up to Maya.
As loyal as I am to Maya, I don't feel that Alias's vision for the product has been revisited for a while. They have been spoiled the past 5 years with a generous head start on Softimage and Discreet, but guess what, they're catching up!
Lowering the prices so drastically, wasn't that to get the software into other markets? If not the primary focus, surely that's a predictable effect.
I'm no marketing genious, but with that said, new markets need different tools. Fluid Effects, hoorah! But cm'on, who has a render farm to work with that stuff?
Give the new maya user's some bayonets to fight with, I can't haul around an ion cannon like fluid effects?!
How about a kick @ss toon renderer!
It's the biggest croud pleaser!
I wrote David Gould and although it took a couple of weeks for a one line reply, the fact that I *got* one helped my aching heart a little: "Development has currently been postponed. I will contact you when development resumes."
Someone is at least manning a cannon - albeit a year or more from the frontline. :insane: (sigh)
Perhaps Adobe has a better vision for Maya than Alias.
Sincerely,
Sammy

That's what i've been seeing too from A|W.
Not giving themself the full exposure by developing tools for the demands today.
Why do you think Discreet gave support into developing the Swift3d tool and PLASMA !
Also... i see alot of demand in the '3dBuzz' VTM's.
They only thing A|W had to do there was sponsor Buzz and provide him with 1 copy of Maya 4.5
Is that so hard ??
What is 1 copy which is worth $7500 compared to hundreds or
thousands of people WORLDWIDE who will see the potentials of Maya.
It's only a win-win situation - And the best marketing strategy as the VTM's are distributed by 3dbuzz and featured on magazine covers and so on.
Just 1 copy, that's all there is to it.... free advertising cause the program will sell itself.
If A|W wants more people to buy their products.... then they should show their face on every corner and in every market as of today and tomorrow.
Continue with the current development of their software yes... but also look at the other developments that have high demands.
