I also tried the object painter demo and it seems to work really nice. The hability to easily choose wich map you want to paint and see the results in real time is very good for the workflow.
Before anyone spends their hard erned cash on Object Painter take a look at UVMapper Pro which does pretty much the same thing, plus UVmapping for less than 1/2 the price. I don't know if it's as good, I haven't used either since there's no Mac version :(

dear BAZC
till you pointed it out, i overlooked somehow UVMAPPER PRO. I was totally unaware of that feature...Thanks for pointing out.. And thanks Cali for starting this thread. And i also wanna thank the CG academy for giving me this chance...
I have tried objectpainter though...and it was working pretty smooth.. UVmapper Pro is kind of dead...no forum is working...last update was in 2004...if he updates it will be really full blown application i guess.
So first rule of being a 3d guy, spend 90 percent of your time on forums, because you will do the same thing with your 10 percent after you find good threads like this.:)
your results may vary... i really dont care.... :)

Nope, the last update was March 16th 2006 and they've released a universal binary version of UVmapper Classic for OSX. Granted the forums are down but the site seems pretty active. I just wish they'd release UVmapper Pro for Mac. Doesn't seem terribly likely now though :(

I wanted to try jahshaka but it kept crashing on me so I gave up. Maybe when 2.0 comes out I will take a look again.

Hi,
I've been playing around with Jahshaka for the past few days. I don't have the budget right now to afford an "After Effects" style program so I've been looking for something like this for a while.
There's not a lot of documentation, but when you get into it, it works very well. I've had some issues with the GPU effects (I'm using a Radeon 9600xt 256MB) but the CPU effects work fine. For basic video editing and compositing it's great. I've had not problems compositing and color adjusting sequences. Since it likes to work with Image sequences that's great for me also since I prefer to render that way anyways.
What is also nice is the player that comes with it, which will play the image sequences including an option to play from RAM. There is also the ability to control the FPS so you can play around with an image sequence an see what it will look like at various speeds. The player alone is worth using it since I don't know of any other player that will handle image sequences as well and is free.
You are supposed to be able to save out the image sequences an an MPG, but this always crashes. However, since I'm using V2.0 RC3 and the site says RC4 will be mostly bug fixes, I'm hopeful.
There are also editing modules and effects modules that seem to be well done. Again, it's not going to compare to a $1000+ program, but for something that is free it is very useable.
I guess to summarize: If you can afford a better program and/or do not have time to mess around then I'd say this is NOT for you. However, if you have patience and want a useable program that costs nothing then it's worth looking at.
PROS: Free. Good set of core compositing functionality. Great support for image sequences. Good media player.
CONS: GPU support doesn't seem to work with my card. Crashes sometimes. Some features don't seem to work. Not a lot of documentation.
Hope this helps some.
Thanks
