CGTalk - Rock / cliff faces

Hi, this has been bugging me for a while now. I just cant seem to paint photo realistic rock / cliff faces. Things like this:

The trees / sky / ground easy, but cliff faces.. :( Im asking this for some painting I am currently working on, I dont want to use photographs because thats cheating. Does anyone have a good tutorial or idea on how I can paint cliff faces like that in Photoshop?

Personally, I'd find a few different references and use PS's clone tool to make a new one.

Wish I could give you more than that, but I haven't pursued a mesh like that yet.
