Here is my demo reel, ‘Breakfast with The King’.
I am now looking for work as a Character Animator.
BWTK was completed as my final project at Vancouver Film School. It was modeled and animated in XSI, edited in Premier Pro, and small effects added in After Effects. All visual elements were done by me with a lot of suggestions from my classmates and instructors.
All comments and suggestions are welcome. I know the effects animation needs work, but the character animation was priority.
Want a cheap laugh, download the Development clip. Its my bit of acting with a pillow down my shirt.
Thank-you…. Thank-you very much.
Please download to your hard drive before viewing as the files are not streaming.

hey fonda,
great work man. i've seen the progression of your work over the past 6 months and i think the final piece turned out well. i like your overall look, very nice style. i think my only crit with the piece is that the king's eyes seem a little dead at times. the electrical shock bit killed me. all in all well done, scholarship time well spent.
cheers

When I read the title, "BREAKFAST WITH THE KING", I expected to see someone waking up to that creepy guy from the BURGER KING commercials, not "FAT ELVIS" in his tighty-whities. That's almost as creepy.
The animation does need some work in places, but it was pretty enjoyable overall.
The music was perfect for the visuals. I liked how you cut to a shot outside of the window during the fire sequence with no sound and just the visuals for a moment; that change of camera angle helped grab the the viewers attention and made the situation seem more comical as well as immediate. I liked the voice you used for Elvis, it sounded enough like him and helped sell the idea that we were watching the King cooking breakfast.

A local Elvis impersonator lent me his voice for this one. His years of experince gave it just a little bit more.
Very funny, like the style. I find the animation good as well. Nice job

Haha, i like the character very much, he is comical.
I like the animation too.
I will try to give something to crit though since i'm sure that is what you are looking for, even thou im reaching with these here. I thought of; when he is flipping the egg in the pan, perhaps vary the timing of the flips, because they all seem to come close to being very evenly spaced. or even on the last flip really have him anticipate that last big throw before he turns around to face the camera.
another thing i thought of was when the fire first erupts and you hear that woosh sound of the flame, he has a jumpy reaction right before he starts to sniff the air, which just confused me because it almost seemed odd that he would JUMP as if he knew a fire had started but then still sniff, and slowly turn around. I might want to try doing it without that initial take and just go from relaxed to sniffing the air, to turning around.
maybe all in all, just try to give the timing more texture, even on the first shot, have him really FLY into frame quickly, it seems more like he is on a conveyor belt then carrying any mass like you would running and sliding. Or when he is electrocuted, hold one of those poses longer, and make another shorter, etc, i think would give it all that extra kick
but awesome work, and very funny concept. such a finished looking work for a school project

Now that you mentioned it, I can see it now too, the egg flip is too even. Maybee an extra acrobatic flip in the air would have made it more funny. Darn, I could have used your eye when I was animating this.
As for the slide in... In hindsight I would have done it a little differently. But, it was only my second shot to animate in the whole project. Didn't quite have it all down at that time. Oh well.
Thanks for the crit. Its at times like this, I can almost feel my eye getting better at seeing these issues.
