View Full Version : connecting nurbs surfaces
saxell 01-09-2003, 10:38 AM Lets say i got two nurbs surfaces , a plane to which i projected a circular curve and trimed a hole , the other one is a tube.
Now i want to do a blend surface in between, I can make it look god , almost perfect but the problem is that if I add for example a noise to the object I can clearly see that the surfaces are not realy connected, they go apart.
Anybody got a solution for this??

The top one is fine and the bottom one is with noise added just to show the surfaces are not attached properly

youve stumbled across a major NURBS problem - trunking
in nurbs you cannot trunk effectively without using trims and blends.
did you know that in trimming a surface, its actually just a ender trick. thats why you can still see the isoparms of the underlying surface. the trimmed hole [that sounds pornographic] is actually justa curve on surface.
soulution: subd

In other words this cant be done :(
I did increase the mergespinner in the toplevel and it helped but not good enough.
Do i have to give up now and go to subd again damit, i heard that nurbs should be such a powerfull tool but id like to know what its usefull for if anybody knows

nurbs is useful in designs that dont need to transfrom much or uniformly across their topologies. :applause:
i used to use it a lot in product design, cause you could cut holes for buttons and then use the trim curves to make the buttons themselves, trim fenders for cars, etc.
i found it a pain in the ass for organic ANIMATED models
theres a lot of old schoolers who wont let go of their indigos [sgi] who will curse me for saying this. evolve or die.
ps still good for product design
ps i dont know that what ur saying cant be done. im just saying, personally, i would use subd

Thanks a lot
Ill continue learning nurbs modeling and use it for non animated stuff cause i actualy like it :)
What i meant by it cant be done was that i cant use a noise modifier like i tried on the pics above.

Saxell, you will soon come to find that max nurbs have a lot of shortcomings, if you plan on sticking with nurbs modeling, you may want to consider implementing other software. Just my 2 cents

Nah i wont go that far with nurbs , thing is that i want to give myself more choices when im gona model something, and i wanna be able to use as much of max as possible.
