thanks xenoid..appreciate the help.. don't really see enough muscle deformation in the comet plugin...Judds plugin seems a whole lot better.
Thanks again.

Perhaps your looking into scripting / developing your own tools, but if you're just after ways to get muscle type effects I'd take a look at Chris Evan's "Simulating Musculature in Maya" (http://chrisevans3d.com/tutorials/maya_muscle.htm) tutorial and perhaps think about purchasing the fahrenheitdigital (http://www.fahrenheitdigital.com/dvds/rigging/) rigging & skinning DVD's.

I've found that including stretchy bones (which are linked into the underlying skeleton) within the skinning step provides a close representation of how a muscle would buldge.

Just add more stretchy bones to refine how the overlaying mesh is deformed during animation. You can even refine the buldge by easing in morph targets based on the angle of rotation various bones within your skeleton bones are at in frame.

If you want an extreme closeup to a muscle in action (where you want to showcase your skills) with actual sub-surface deformation then perhaps it would be better to purchase one of the muscle plugins out there.

I purchased cgskin and it has unique ways of blending the underlying objects (muscle mass) to the mesh or a proxy with Skin Wrap (3dsmax).

Did you look at the correct Michael Comet plugin? His cMuscle plugin gives incredible amounts of control. It's a full muscle system for Maya.

Did you by chance look at his Pose Space Deformation plugin by mistake?

Check out this thread in the Works In Progress section. This guy - Joel - is showing the process of modeling and muscle rigging a triceratops using cMuscle. It's very informative.
