View Full Version : An Extreme "Color Me" Mini-Challenge
OK, you CG color folks, here's an ultimate challenge for you. Gandan is a new member here and has recently posted (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35939) a couple of extremely detailed and wonderfully rendered B&W illustrations (see below).
Gandan is looking for inspiration from us on how to proceed with these illustrations with c o l o r .
So, warm up those Wacoms and show us what you can do! :arteest:
Please mind the forum rules (http://sv2.3dbuzz.com/Upload/i37593druid.jpg) regarding using the attached image feature of CGTalk. Multiple WIPs won't be allowed for this. Edit your previous post to show your progress or finished work please. I'll allow last 2 updates only per user. Please remove WIPs after posting finished works.
Thanks and have fun! :xtreme:

I started coloring the first one. It may be awhile before I finish it though. I'm still working on my Disney challenge and the new CGTalk challenges should be starting this week.
So, a WIP is coming ... just don't know when. :wip:

Count me in as well. I started on the second one, but it's really slow going with all of those details. If I'm lucky, I might finish by next year;)

I decided to take a quick stab at the first one.
For some reason she reminds me of a Godess more than a Seer.
Something in the stance maybe.
I did some quick tryouts using Painter Classic and it's watercolor tools. http://www.spatiallight.net/imagesPage/images/diana2.jpg

IF i buy a computer pen, can i use it like i use a marker or a colour pencil?
dmcgrath: You use blue for her costume, that is how i envision her! I think with render will come out amazing!

I did say it was an 'extreme' challenge right? Heheheh - Keep at it and these will be nice additions to your coloring portfolios (remember to credit gandan though)!
gandan Yes, a graphic tablet and pen (like a Wacom) is a must for anyone who does any amount of coloring on their computer. I shudder to think I did this with a mouse for several years. Ugh! With Photoshop or Painter you can mimic the feel of markers, watercolors, chalk, etc.
boy oh boy
GONG-BOY
cant wait to sink my pen into this one.
its going to be a orgy of fantastical colour.
then again these pictures look to me as though they require some dark, rick colouring.grundgy perhaps.Lets just see what happens.
i swear, when i start colouring i have no idea of the end result.it just happens and develops.would you guys say thats wrong.i'm sure it must be....hmmmmm.
this time i'll think about it a bit first.
but not too much - im going to have a post up by tonight.
cheers!

Status: WIP no.2 Last Update: 01/10/03 12:54a PST
Description of last changes: After blocking in the basic colors, I went thru and cleaned up some excess sloppy parts and then started to define my light source. On a top layer (set to overlay) above the line art and colors, I used variations of the base colors to make shadows and highlights.
I decided that the staff she's holding is going to be my primary source of light. Makes sense to me since it's night and there's no cues to an other light source out in the wilderness. She's has a staff of light (inspired by Gandalf's - there ... LOTR has had an influence on me :D ).

http://www.allposters.com/getthumb.asp?c=a&Search=Cauty%2C+J%2E
since I don't think I'll have anytime to get involved in any of the actual LOTR challenges, figured I give a little LOTR feel to this. Really ealry in progress, and I believe my first colouring job posted on cgtalk. really need to get more involved inthe 2D section again, what kind of classical animator am I doing all this 3d junk, I'm ashamed.

I don't have a wacom, so digital art is a real challenge, well any art is a real challenge for me lol. Everything I do know about it, (and that's not much), has been through trial and error and self learning. I've never taken an art class of any kind so I'm far from knowledgeable or professional, but I'm pretty proud of what I can accomplish regardless of how bad it might really be. If it looks good to me thats all that really counts, since I do it for my own pleasure.
I ran across this post and just had to give it a shot. It has just been a real pleasure working with your creations :)

Hi maartenw3d
'Previous comment removed' apologies Vanje, I missed your image post and I agree with you last comment. Maartenw3d you really need to site back and realize what this topic was about, then download an image and have a go at you interpretaion, not recolour someone elses.
And the only real advice that I can give as I am new to colouring as well, is dude get a wacom tablet, if that was 6 hours with a mouse then you'll be lethal with a wacom :applause:
Adrendari
Looks like a good start getting your base colours down, run through and get some shadow and highlights in the cloth and it will start to come alive.
!_3menDo_!
Another excellent start, It would be good if you added some contrast to her dress by darkening down some of the strips that lay under others, this will help give a sense of depth to the dress.

maartenw3d,
Why don't you make an original attempt at it and then ask for critiques... I don't mind you looking at what I've done and attempting to emulate the technique. But it's a bit disconcerting to know that what you've basically done is downloaded what I've done and changed the coloring and then added a few touches of your own. Anyone can do that... :hmm:
I don't want to sound rude, but I would never take someone's piece of work and do anything like that and then call it my own.
Gandan was kind enough to give us permission to take his sketches to see what we could do with them, use the opportunity to test your own limits.
If you have questions about how I did something, I certainly would be happy to try and explain how I did it.

hmm thnx guys for ur respond neway..this was a little test for myself neway
Vanje what i did is made a grayscale of ur shadows.. and then smudge and added / multiplied _my feeling to it.. and afterwards i started colouring the whole piece with burning and dodging .. i even used paths and all.. so it wasnt just a colour change..:p
Maybe it wasnt smart ot do that.. but i just didnt know where 2 start :D
Neway maybe if i got some more spare time left i will have a shadow lightning try myself and respost ..
