View Full Version : Spraying Water -> a real challege
Aaron Moore 01-09-2003, 07:34 AM I need to make the effect of water spraying off a car/its body and tires, as it drives on a wet course. I need to create spray effects that resemble water spray, and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or methods of constructing such a effect.
I'm fine with needing to use many particle systems. The problem is controlling them to create the look and feel of spray.
I've just begun to work on some effects and wanted to post the question to see how others might approach creating such effects.
PLEASE help me figure out some ideas for doing this. (BTW it needs to be animatable and dynamic)
here is what I am talking about:

I'll post my progress and techniques as I construct it, but I really need some idea to get me going.
Thanks

thats a tough one. .. . . .
i'm real curious to see how this will turn out, i have an idea as to maybe how it could work but it let me take it into max and see if it looks at all decent

The first thing that comes to mind would be to try particle combustion.

Hi,
I did a similar thing almost 2 years ago. I animated a crawler excavator. Its tracks were wirling up dust.
To create the effect, I used particle clouds or arrays (I don't remember) which were attached to the tracks. The particle motion direction, the velocity, rate and turbulance were driven by expressions. When the excavator was moving forward, the back particle clouds were creating dust in the oposite direction. The rate and velocity were controlled by the moving speed, and so on.
I defined the ground and parts of the c.e. as deflector objects. Finally I added wind with turbulance on and created a convincing dust particle material.
In the final composite it was looking really good.
I hope I gave you an idea you can start with.

PS: In the the 3D Studio Max 3 Magic book is a simmilar example with a tank. I don't know if the book is still available or if the same tutorial is in the MAX 4 Magic book.

Take a look at RealWave by NextLimit. Might be what ya need.

I have that book you are refering to, and the use of a particle system isn't the problem... its getting it to look like turbulence and misty and wet....
I'm playing around with multipal particle systems right now... I will post my progress later, but so far it doesn't even remote look like misty water vapor...
Any more suggestions for creating that cloud like billowing effect?

This may be useful for wakes where the tire drives over the ground, but it really doesn't handle the misty water turbulence

Ok... here i started a little thread on my site for my own documentation reasons.
Take a look... I'm gonna try to render out a preview avi soon so keep your eyes open for that;
