CGTalk - Soft Modification problem

I am rigging up some strings, trying to use Softmodification tool to control a curve. When I deselect the soft mod tool the node goes away. Anyone know a way to keep the node around and use it for animation?

turn on 'preserve history' in the soft mod option box
