Hi!

I've been trying to figure this out on my own but have not found a solution:

Is it possible to smudge two seperate layers at the same time while maintaining their ...umm... 'seperatness'?

Thanks for the help :)

Doesn't look like it, no. You could draw a path for the smudging, and stroke the path on both layers. That's my only workaround, sorry.

Just click the "Sample All Layers" checkbox before you use the smudge tool.

FYI I'm using Photoshop CS2, I don't know if that's available in previous versions.

I thought sample all layers only took into account the other layers when smudging.

You might be able to create an action with the smudge then just play it on all the seperate layers.

thank you for the help guys!

@vaXn8d: That's definitely an option but it would really be tough to get quick feedback with that method.

@gardocki: I tried the 'Sample All Layers' option but it clones the smudged areas from all layers on to the active layer.

@TychoCelchuuu: I'll certainly give the recorded actions a try ... I just have to see if the 'Path' or 'Actions' method is the quicker of the two.

thanks again for the help everyone... i really appreciate it :)

Ok I figured out a way. The Actions option doesn't seem to work. You can do it using Liquify though. Thing is Liquify works on only one layer at a time, so in order to properly visualize the process, you should merge the 2 layers into a temporary 3rd layer.

Here's your quickest way out -
- Make the two layers the only 2 visible layers in the file.

- Hit Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E - this will combine the contents of the visible layers and place it in a new layer.

- With the new layer selected, hit Ctrl+Shift+X to launch the Liquify editor - you have a nice smudging tool over there.

- When you're done with the finger painting, instead of clicking OK, click 'Save Mesh' & erm..save the mesh.

- Clicking OK is optional as the mesh data is already stored, but you should do it anyway, so that you can compare the results later.

- Now select the other 2 layers one at a time & run the Liquify command on each one. Use the 'Load Mesh' button to retrieve your saved mesh & click OK for each layer.
Done!
