Hello, ive just finished a short film and would really like some feedback. It is complete but there are some tweaks i would like to do. Let me know what you think. (follow the link and its on the frontpage) Thanks. James

It has been shortlisted for the University of Hertfordshire end of year film festival which is on the 16th of june. The website is currently under construction but it will start inviting people soon so take a look.

www.h3da.co.uk (http://www.h3da.co.uk/)

ps. it was encoded with div x so you will need the codec to play it.

http://www.jamesspillman.co.uk (http://www.jamesspillman.co.uk/) (please watch on youtube link below, if you can. Thankyou)

EDIT: Here a link to the film on youtube, if you can please watch it from here as i am very quickly running out of bandwidth. Its not as high qulity but it would help me out a lot. Thank you.

Thanks yahyaehsan

Glad you liked it. Yeah there are a few bits that need tweaking hopefully going to work on them over the next few weeks. thanks for the reply.

that was pretty damn funny. I really felt the pain when max crashed, ouch! Clever story man.

Outstanding. Made me laugh a lot. Well put together and animated. I especially love the little Tron type thing that you only see for a split second. Don't change anything... please :)

Definately 5* from me

jumbojimbo
05-26-2006, 05:26 PM
Thanks kantcho and mr-miley

mr-miley the only thing I really want to tweak are the max tool controls, i just wanna make them stand out a bit because sometimes its hard to to see what tools im clicking to make the things happen on screen. Im happy you liked it.

This is simply on of the best and most entertaining short I have seen since long time!
The whole Idea is cool and you directed everything just great! I really enjoyed watching it.
If I may criticize something, that would be the animation, not quiet perfect but I can see you have well improved your style since your past work (stairway to heaven). But the story is so nice that you can easily be forgiven for that. But don't get me wrong, the animation works fine anyway!
Great work, really!

I like the concept and art direction, however the animation needs some work,

cool film

cheers Saihtam, RVG and Huracan.

Hurican, thanks for the kind works. Yeah animation is an area i would like to improve upon as i would like to work in that area. This is only my second real attempt at character animation and with time i hope to get better, im glad you liked it though.

Could you give me some pointers to what animations stick out the most and could do with the most improvement and why. Thanks a lot.

I forgot to add that this was a final project for graduation at the University of Hertfordshire.
I have a few tweaks to do and shall post up the newer version within the next couple of weeks, which will be shown at the Hertfordshire animation film day along with a bunch of other great movies from the course.

very nice concept and cool animation!

very cool idea! the problem is that the first time i watched it i didn't even notice all the stuff u did whit your pointer, you ofcorse focus on the guy and what he's doing.
maybe if u have some small cuts to where u only see the pointer and so on but then again maybe its will ruin the feeling that ur watching the screen.

for being your first real attempt at animation its very good but the idea and other technical stuff like the box hand its so well done that the animation stands out as the weaker part of the short.

i guess its u who made the live acting performance? =)
its kinda "bad acting" sometimes but i know how hard it is.
the main part where i don't like the acting is after max crashes, that motion where u rubb your hand its more a evil type of gesture and it just seems wrong to me.

anyhow great short nontheless!

OMG that crash tone.. when max crash.. its HORRIBLE !!! Have nightmares from it !!

The short was verry original. Really like the tron struff haha. Good work.

Nice work James, I'm seeing some inspired work coming from herts uni. Keep it up.

Thanks everyone for your comments

Bluder - yeah thats the main thing i have to change. Going to make eveything i do much more obvious and bigger. I didnt like doing the live action LOL. However i was going for evil at the end because i had been trying to catch the character to delete him for so long that after max crashes im happy hes gone. Animation is definately an area i am going to improve. Thanks for your critisisms though.

Blackwood - yep theres some great work being made at herts, glad you liked it.

Thanks a lot everyone.

It's perfect. The concept, the story, the models. I think it is one of the best 3D short I have ever seen. Everytime when I turn on my PC I watch your short.
I think it is much better than your old short "Stairway to heaven", but the story of "StH" is also amazing.
I think you have chosen the music of "C://max/run" perfectly !!!
Yeah, great work!!!

Very nice idea! Funny enough I had a similar idea a while back for something like this... The problems are pretty apparent though; the animation could use polishing and the whole point of really letting us see what you're doing with the cursor, although I managed to keep track of it all pretty well.
You could probably have the animation pause and darken when you're moving around the command panel perhaps...?
It's nice to see a short pop up now and again that's for us 'geeks', the point is to balance it out properly so that the general audience can find it entertaining too. Look at "Cubic Tragedy" for instance, I can't really take a look at it objectively though but I think it has a slightly more universal appeal, although the transform gizmo does cause some goosebumps, heh.

I totally agree with MAX's error tone, my splash screen is that error dialogue to remind me of the dread, I've even changed that windows sound because it just really ends up haunting you...

Cheers

Ive bought a gig of extra bandwidth and RezaMisaghi has kindly offered to mirror for a bit. my limit should start again at the beginning of the month.

Thanks carl, yeah been finding it hard to show whats happening off screen without distracting from the film. I like the idea of pausing the animation and focusing on the tools but the musics kinda in synch with what happens so it would be difficult to keep it flowing. Also youre right the animation could do polishing. I do agree about cubic tragedy being able to appeal to the masses easier ive been thinking about creating my own UI in flash and making it a lot more obvious to see whats happening. Thanks for the comments.

Great Job~
I kinda like the idea of the 4 viewport where the character was running around,
The idea of the "alive" cursor actually reminds me of another shortclip - cubic tragedy
The max error at the end of the clip was sweet ~

How many times have we seen ...
An Error has occur, max will attempt to save
Recovery failed.
Program wil now shutdown.

I liked the bit when the biped steps out of the poor guy and he has to carry his own mesh around, heehee.

Very funny movie, although you have to be a Max user to really apreciate it.

Excellent little short you got there :) Very funny but like others have said, animation needs a bit of tweaking and the lighting could be better in some instances but that depends on what kind of look you want of course. Other than that, excellent idea!

niice :) original, clever and well performed. Liked when the biped left his body, great stuff! But, i´m sure you know by now. The transitions. or rather, the sudden halts of the camera. that was what bothered me the most. and maybe the audio too. I was a second away from turning the radio back on when the music finally started. The non-cg shots need some audio of it´s own, i think.

Nonetheless, great work

OMG! When his biped steps out of his mesh! Excellent! Only if he was shown putting his biped back into himself and trying to set his envelopes, but never quite getting it right to where he would leave behind finger or toe verts.

Excellent though! Thanks for the crash also. Without that, we wouldn't know what software you were using. Hehehehe.

Funny short.

A detail, ok i'm loud, there is an error into the title

It's not a correct dos/win32 path or even a URL :)
It's rather:

basically everything you have already commented on that needs fixin'.

maybe he could be having "tea" at the end when he tries to delete you :)

The concept is absolutely brilliant. The animation is good but could use some tightening. Don't let that discourage you though, I'm sure you know how few student projects get anywhere near that stage.

Keep it up :D

Great Short!

I would say dont change any of the animation! I think its perfect the way it is!
It gives the film a rough feeling that its done on the fly while you are chasing the character,
no time to pollish keyframes here!
,..And also a reason why you would like to delete the character! he is not perfect.

I really like when he holds the pointer and turns his head and sees the wobbeling guys approach.,,.by the way i like the hole film!

jumbojimbo
06-02-2006, 07:47 PM
hi everybody thanks for the comments and crits.

I did think about having teapots but never really got to adding. maybe next time.

xevious from beginning to end took about5-6 months (this includes modelling texturing and animating.) although i had thought the idea through a little bit before however a lot of the ideas just came to me as i was working on it so i just went with them.

My website is down at the mo, trying to get some more websapace but may take a while. Until then please use youtube or the mirror kindly provided by Reza Misaghi. Thank you.

I like it, as someone already said the animation could be improved but then that is a perfect excuse to delete him, the character wasn`t working right :)

I wouldn`t bother adjusting transitions either as its all supposed to happen on screen so as you don`t get transitional efects in max that logical.

I like it a lot regardless of the nudity.
