View Full Version : Heavy Rain demo video
Stahlberg 05-23-2006, 07:11 PM This is from Quantic Dreams booth at E3, demoing tech coming up in their next game Heavy Rain, for the PS3. It's a grabbed video, not rendered.
It's big - 132 Mb - but I think it's worth it. The tech is amazing all by itself (HDR, finger/tongue animation, dynamic hair/curtains/plants/rain/tears, realtime postprocessing, DOF, pupil dilation), but the writing and acting is incredible... it's intense, scary, funny.
Some screens:

Of course I'm probably a little biased, since I helped to create it (modeling&textures, mostly). :)

Advisory: There is some cussing in the video. (2 or 3 f-bombs)
Very immersive. I imagine the lip-synching was procedural and matched to the voice audio?
The use of DOF is cool enough as it is.

So, it's all keyframed, right? Or is the software somehow generating/"acting" all that movement on its own like some super-enhanced steroid version of endorphin?

I think I first saw this around E3.
I love his work but the model's mouth lets it down for me. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a lovely piece (quite unsettling in it realism and mood). The face on a whole is beautifully realised, it's just that there's something really odd about her mouth and something that is very distracting from an otherwise quiality work. The corners of her lips are strange (the way the light hits them). And those teeth are just... well too much. I also found the animation of the mouth/lips a bit strange.
On a more positive note- I love when she comes close to the camera and the lighting changes and the focus shifts. Superb!! and the subtle rendering of the background and when the lightning reflects on the fridge.
Her eyes and skin are beautifully done as well.
One thing that I found quite strong was the actual script or dialogue. It really pulled my heart strings *sniffs*
Quality

Yeah, brother sent me a link to this vid a while ago. Impressive stuff.
However, I also agree with mindrot's comment about the mouth. Very distracting. I don't know...maybe it's the real-time rendering engine that gives it that weird look.
Nevertheless, it is still very impressive.

Mocap, this is written in the end of the demo...
Really, really nice work on the models, the texturing, the lighting, etc., but in the end it's the performance that matters, isn't it (unless the point was just a tech demo, I guess)? The animation (especially the face) just doesn't hold up the illusion like the other elements do...

impressed overall by the quality and dialog, but a lot of things didn't seem to meet in the middle. I did enjoy the story line and acting aspects greatly.
i noticed a few things that others have pointed out... lip sync is off, or it seems the lips do not move properly. the reflective mouth corners and the hands not flexing during 99% of the video really distract me. not a fan of mocap and the floaty arms throughout. seems the elbows are always pointed away from body, which is very unnatural.
Look forward to seeing what's to come. ciao.

She looks great, but she doesn't move very realistically. She kind of seems like she is in molasses. The lip sync is off like its recorded in another language? I think this is a limitation of hyper realism style in animation. The model is fantastic and texturing is fantastic though, congrats on the model! Although it doesn't look like there is any anti-aliasing.

this is a PS3 game, so i suppose it was running on PS3-equiv dev-kits.
the body animations used mocap, as far as i read. the hands and face anims were manual keyframes.
this was kinda weird cause some of the expressions were awesome (vide 1st screenshot) and some plain suck (right at the beginning). but overall... it shows how you can even with a little awkwardness show some emotion and impact the gamers in more effective ways than current generation games.
can't wait to see the final version of this game :)
stahlberg u did a fantastic job, although the guy that was messing with lights should have darkened the inside of the mouth, or maybe it should be baked in the texture? Oh no, it's PS3!!
(sorry when I see such an amazing job being screwed up for one of those huge tiny details...)

I saw this during the E3 fracas a few weeks back - very impressive stuff, but that mouth animation is really poor!
Her upper lip moves around like shes having spasms and makes her look quite gormless in places. Very impressive visuals - just those lips! She looks like a rubber muppet!
I dont know about everyone else, but i just find Silent Hill 3/4 and HL2s faces more impressive. They dont look as good as this technically, but you believe they are more human just through the performance and face expressions.
I guess joystiq didnt like the mouth either:
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/18/heavy-rain-in-the-uncanny-valley/
I really hope the game will be better than its predecessor - Farenheit: the indigo prophecy. I thought it was one of the daftest and most poorly executed games ive played in a while - especially near the end! You die, and fight the internet, matrix style for gods sake! After such a good start too....
I dont mean to knock your work steven - youre one of my fave 3d modelers out there - its just that i actually burst out laughing as soon as i saw her mouth move!
Someone needs to get that facial animation sorted if theyre to sympathise/ emote with the characters.
Still, its really nice to see some real time PS3 stuff that looks good.

05-23-2006, 11:58 PM
Wow, that's some seriously skinny upper arms!
No really, a GREAT tech demo, the postprocessing was especially cool. I like the skin texture, the area around the eyes is great. The modelling was so-so honestly. Most of it was very good, but I'm a face-person, and there's something definately weird about her face. Especially the mouth and teeth.
I was going to bash the lipsyncing a bit, but then I thought, hey, it's a GAME after all, and that's pretty damn good for a game. It'd be nice if she ever closed her mouth though, her mouth kind of just slides around in limbo, instead of forming clear syllables...
I suppose what it all boils down to is - The closer you get to "real", the easier it is to break the illusion. It's weird really, how great the mind is at filling in gaps, or how it can just tear something apart.

that looks great. the only crits i have were already mentioned. the mouth area, the blends in general need some work. for something that looks this real and this good it doesnt move that real or that good.
but otherwise its beautiful! neat little idea too.
This is actualy PC ,PS3 & XBOX360 game AFAIK. It's just that Sony paid Quantic Dreams to play this tech demo at their booth (so everyboy assusmed that it was a PS3 exclusive). The demo is prolly running on a GF 7900 (or ATI XT1XXX as there's no DX10 chips sampled yet AFAIK. Crysis' DX10 path demo was using emulation/refrast)

Looks neat and all.. but the other next gen tech demos I've seen look quite a bit better, art wise. That main character just never looked right... thick neck.. huge honkin teeth... always staring.. nothing right about the mouth...
The facial animation was never looking 'on' either...
She looks good in that still thats shown.. but in motion it looks really off
Thanks for sharing though
Fantastic writing, voice acting and technically brilliant, BUT let down horribly by robotic facials and mouth animation.
Overall not bad but when a piece distracts you because of the mentioned shortcomings it really lets it down.

Holy smokes, that was incredible! And the writing and dialogue was pretty gripping. I can't believe this is real-time! (it is, isn't it?)
I do agree there were a few quirks here and there with lip-syncing and body proportions (the skinny arms especially), but judging from video game point of view instead of looking at it as some kind of movie, it really is indeed incredible and makes me very eager to look forward to what the next-gen systems have to offer.
Pretty amazing stuff.
Thanks for sharing!

Acccording to IGN this is also could be coming out on the 360 is that the case?
You know,
I have to say that this was really really damn well done and effective.
very effective.
I guess i'm just a cornball but it started getting me thinking about this girl that I passed up a chance with in the past, and totally regret.
Got me all emo and stuff.. so I have to say, that must mean this little film was a success!
HOWEVER,
on the technical side of things,
and I don't mean to offend whoever worked on this, just my opinion is all..
but alot of the material in this was not all that impressive. Not BAD mind you,
but for a tech demo showing off the "amazing" ps3, I wasn't all that blown away.
I mean, look at the main character, and her CLOTHES for one,
alot of it looked like it was just tattoed onto her, blurry textures for wrinkles instead of actually modeling them.
And the lipsynch was really pretty bad i'm afraid..
not sure what happened there...
also, overall it just had a sort of "grainy", "pixely", look to it,
looked really like a really well done ps2 game that had been up rez'd with more polys..
background textures, and the womans face were really impressive though.

Super hard to get realistic facial animation on realtime characters...
We have the same problem...
There's definitively something wrong with the "animated tong".
One of the problem is the rendering ot the eyes and the tooth. They dont take shadows...
They badly stand out...
But very nice modeling on he character...

I have no idea what that is, all I know is they told me it ran on a PS3 dev kit.
this is also could be coming out on the 360?
Who really knows, it's early yet and I'm just a lowly artist and that is more a strategic decision made by management. :)
About the mouth issue, we're aware of it, it's on a list of things to do. Part of the problem is that the original actress does have a really big mouth and really big teeth, and the realtime engine is unable to cast as detailed a shadow from the lips as would be necessary, and probably the animation is a little off (test stills in Mental Ray look fine). About a sound sync issue, I think they said it was due to a technical problem at the booth, anyway they seem aware of that too.

You know- I got the vague impression that the character was hard of hearing. She had the look of a deaf person because of the strange disconnect with the lip movement and mouth. It would be cool if more games had this kind of psychological thriller feel.

I was amazed when i've seen this video, a week ago.. RTpostprocessing is really great, model, script and the animation too, but i agree with the lip-sync issue, but it's still WIP right..
With this technology, plus QDs' cinematic game making mentality(Indigo Prophecy) , i'm sure the game will be their masterpiece.

A perfect example of the uncanny valley problem with computer generated people.
I saw this at E3 with a few co-workers and friends from another studio were it was quickly dubbed "the creepy cgi lady demo". On one hand its technically impressive, on the other hand.. it was.. well.. something was off, like her smile and some of her reactions. It didn't feel/look right.
Is this being made into a game? Or was it a tech demo?
if only they fixed her upper lip so it doesn't show so much teeth it would be perfect :)

Really great video, good point of comparaison with Xbox360 technology and PS3. Maybe you are some who think that's a good step in real time animation, but the realism of the model and texture look definitively in breaks with the facial animation who does not get advantage of soft body muscle. And I think that the wrinkles may be done by blending some normal maps pass.
the DOF look good...too but It's really something strange with the lips animation... if you look the video only by masking is lips it look good ! The hand movement look too straight at some moment. Do you think the same ?
But with all that, It's a really impressive video. I hope that's the French Game will be good as this video. ( I hope too , because it's a french studio ^^ )

That screenshot looks a lot better than the vid. What bothered me the most was the lipsync and overall mouth expressions. Why not mocap that too? It's not even close to emulating what's being said. The rest of the movie is excellent. Even though the lighting/shading looked like PS1.
I think that that exclusive part in the movie looks exact as in the screenshot

How can it be? Let's see...
1. The tech is amazing. You missed that it's realtime? (Take another closer look, with the sound off. Cover the mouth if it stops you from seeing the rest.)
2. The writing is amazing.
3. The acting is amazing. (Play it again, turn up the sound, hide the window.)
4. Even the music is cool, fits so well.
So yeah, I guess you must have downloaded the wrong video.

Did you play past half way? :P I agree the story was great but past half way it went seriously downhill (I would like to think this wasn't the writers fault though).
Regarding the trailer, definitely had uncanny valley issues. I would have liked more a bit more emotion from the vocal performance (and the face).
I like the concept and agree with the writing. I managed to feel something despite the weaknesses in performance.
Technically its great, as for the corners of the mouth and teeth, I agree they ruin it alot but I think they can be corrected quite easily.

wow, i like the model a lot, the skin shader is really good, like the Fight Night or MGS4 ones.
the only thing that bothers me a little bit are the teeths when she smiles and the hight light behind her neck and cheeks, it should cast theshadows from the hair.
but those are just small little things, the detail on the face is incledible and the eye shader is super good!
is still a 5 stars piece.

Awesome work rather let down by the facial animation, specifically the mouth issues everyone has mentioned. Another thing that bothered me is when she smiles big the nose shows no movement, the cheeks go up, she has smiley eyes, the upper lip area moves just great but all that should slightly move the nose... would be nice to see it.

Alright, Everyone has complained about the mouth and the teeth. I wonder when Realtime engines will start faking mouth shadows with prebaked animated shadows for the colormaps.
all you'd need to do is tie the mouth's shape to the animated map(s) (more would be better) though even a singular map with a growing/shrinking oval shape would be an improvement.
This should be totally plausible with this engine. those animated bumps over the eyebrows are already doing the same thing.
just a thought.
Still, Great work! I can't wait to see it when it comes out :)

HL2 looks a little better around the mouth, at certain times. I agree. It's a bug to be fixed.
Those joystiq guys? Yeah, they're funny. "OMG she's so creepy I can't sleep now!!" :D
listing up the good points won`t make it amazing, and as with anything the overall result is what counts, if something that doesnt quite work stands out, well... the mood, the acting, etc just go down like a house of cards!
But I understand your defensive nature, it`s a style that you like.

( I hope too , because it's a french studio ^^ )
you can view this video on Gametrailers here (http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?fs=1&id=2717) !
or here (http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=10758&type=mov&pl=game) directly
Heavy Rain is an Xbox360 title as well, not PS3 exclusive.

I've told you my opinion. You told me yours. Do not condescend. You do not understand my 'nature', or what 'style' I like, any more than I understand yours.

I think everyone here has made his point about the mouth, teeth and few glitches here and there, but as Mr Stahlberg reminds us, it's a real time video and I think it's quite amazing for what it is. These small issues everyone noticed are the kind of thing that can easily be fixed in further versions. As for the acting/emotional part, this is a great work and excellent idea to introduce a character. I think everything is working fine here, and that's what makes me forget about all the mouth and that blablah stuff! Maybe the "bring everything down" feeling is due to a lack of sensitivity from some people here!
Great work!

One the whole I thought it was a really well done piece. Sure I noticed the mouth at the beginning, but by the end, the story, acting and music had me sucked in wanting more. I was really hoping she got the part.

everything in this is fantastic... acccept the animation, i know its mocaped but the same old problem of mocap not really picking up the subtle movements of teh actor, and the facial expresions as well. once stuff starts looking this good, the animation totaly has to come along to really drive the story and emotions of the caharacter whic was sorely missing in this.
with such good acting, and writing its unfortunet that the animation was totaly spot on convincing.
other than that dude, this is looking to be really awsome, fantastic work on the model cant wait to see more of what the next gen is truely going to be able to bring in the comming months

I`m not condescending, but just trying to understand your points, and why you try to hide and ignore the bad points of this movie, and you`re right I dont know the range of styles that you like, but from what I`ve learned from the beginning of this thread it is obvious that you like this style, and there`s nothing condescending in those words.
And if I`m really condescending doing the same just makes you look as bad as me.

amazing that its realtime.
i love the eyes, the muscles around the eyes are very expressive and believable. well done!
the story may be well written but i find it is too typical of a soap or movie. would like to see more original storytelling in realtime 3d. but i know it will take awhile to get used to things, to stop copying other media so much. and it probably has more to do with what i would like to see than with the quality of this project. i look forward to seeing what gets done with the technology demo'd here!

Looks really great, but one thing that bugged me (not sure if it's already been mentioned or not), but I wish her cheeks were animated. Maybe it's not the cheeks, but the folds that are made when you smile around your mouth. Especially since this engine is capable of muscle simulations.

All technical achievements considered, ... she is a TOTAL STONE FOX. I love brunettes.
Reminds me a bit of Hillary Swank, don't you think?
Did you model her after any particular references?
Anyways,
Bravo, your hard work really shows ... I especially liked the subtle touches such as the dense chin tissue dimpling on the frown. Also, the production quality in Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy was so completely top of the line, and this looks to keep on in that tradition. Can't wait to get my hands on it (and I wouldn't mind a ps3).

Yes, her name is Aurelie Banchelion
This test is rendered in Maya with Mental Ray

- Excellent job Stahlberg, the model is very accurate and impressive.
The video has a lot of good points, & in comparison to HL2 it does have a few advtanges, however HL2 still remains to me, the most impressive human expression and speech I’ve seen yet in a video game. -
PS: your expressions (if you did them for this) are very well done, they just don’t seem to transition as smoothly as in HL2, as if there is no bridge from one expression to the next, not your fault I’m assuming.

That was some pretty twisted stuff man....great work! The only thing that kinda bugged me somewhat were her teefeses...but that makes her more life like I guess?!?
Anyway...cool stuff, I really enjoyed watching it :)

I cannot stop watching this video. I´m in love with the acting :) Putting apart the problems with the mouth, i think that the overall is almost perfect. The shader of the face and how it looks at its best on the last part of the movie is one of the things that I find very near to be perfect. It is incredible how realistic looks the face with that angle and with that lighting.
Another point is in the eyes. They seem to work better in the darkness than in the light. The specular seems to saturate too much.
I wish she would have shot the gun, not just the sound. It would have made that end perfect :)
Just a little detail that catches my eye everytime i watch the video. Where the shirt folds on the arms looks too "old school", i mean, too much flat :P Other than that, perfecto!
Keep it up! I want Silent Hill with that!!!
EDIT: Oh, i forgot to mention about the tears. Anyone knows some kind of document or tutorial to work with that kind of shader? (assuming it is a shader). Maybe is normal map? They look really great!

Steven,
This is simply amazing work despite the minor flaws in this WIP, I'm working with a small team that has the same goal emotion wise, this is where the real next gen of gaming is, not simply in better graphics, but graphics technology that expands immersion possibilities. I would love to hear more about the entire process of creating this.. 3 months to put it together? fantastic.
Looking forward to the future of gaming,

It's a great demo of technology considering it's realtime.:)
But I have to say that the animation isn't good as the graphic. The lipsynch for me was mediocre and sometimes the eyes instead of being realistic look very scary ( like some robot from Blade Runner). I would like to see maybe less visual effects (dof, etc) and more realistic animation. But, hey, that's just my opinion!
