hi i have like 2 years modeling in cinema but now i am kicking in maya 4.5 ple

i am making and i got this small problem

in the Instant Maya Polygonal Modeling chapter

Extrude claws section i got this problem


Select the vertices at the top and bottom of the edge that divides the two faces. (If the vertices are hard to see, press 4 to select wireframe display mode.) Examine the object from several camera views to make sure you haven't accidentally selected extra vertices.



7. Select Edit Polygons_>_Split Vertex. The reason for splitting the vertices is explained later.
8. Select the two split faces. (To display the face centers, right-click the cube and select Face from the marking menu.)
9. Select Edit Polygons_>_Extrude Face_>_. In the options window, enter 6 for Divisions, then click the Extrude Face button. You may need to scroll the option window to access the Divisions option.

i cant see to make split vertex work!! wen i extrude the faces it cames all together and not sapareted ! like in the picture!
after i move the red box!!

can sombody tell me what i am doing wrong!??
and can u guys give me some tips and tutorials so i can get in too it!


i am making the tutorials from awmaya and i got all the tutorials from
3dlinks.com so if u can give me some more!!!!!

i am not quite sure why you need to split the vertices first - extrude face with "Keep Faces Together" turned off leads to the same result

just turn off the option Polygons->Tool Options->Keep Faces Together
