5 Years your patience certainly might where a little thin, You certainly could model this in max using poly's exactly as they have done on this site.
You would start in the side view with a single face and keep dividing and pulling verts until your point cloud looked like the one in the tutorial, then select all of you faces and extrude them out to the width of the head and then manipulate as the rest of the tutorial shows.
Personally I wouldn't do it that way, If you want to try that particular head, load the side and front view into a max scene and then follow this tutorial for the head construction.

The tutorial is much easier to follow and you will see results much quicker.
Post up an image in the WIP section as you get under way and someone will always help.

Another good reference in the Tutorials List is http://www.comet-cartoons.com
He has a poly modeling tutorial for a head that is hard to beat. It was writtn awhile ago I think for Max 2.5, but it is excellent for placement and how to arange your poly's.
If your using Max 5 I would recommend using the Symmetry Modifier to spped to process of the model, but in all the head's I'v done, the easiest way I've found is to follow what Comet has put up!
thanx for the replies,
vertex the tutorial you mentioned is very good, its the best max tutorial ive seen, theres lots of box modeling ones out there but man i cant stand those. I'm trying out the one you sugested and its pretty efficient, i just gotta keep practicing.
