View Full Version : dont want to be rude but...
I need to find a forum with mainly professional illustrators.
Not that a lot of you guys couldnt be (or arent already)
But i need to be able to get some printing questions and stuff like that answered by (hopefully) very experienced people.
Like i said: no offense, its just the "technical side" of it i need for now and i know it also differs between the U.S and Europe because of our different colorsystems.
has anyone seen any site or forum like that?

'Maybe' I can help ya out?
Surely no offence taken, but I'm sure there are many folks here who can help ya out. I mean, just look around and read some more on this forum!;)

You could try the conceptart.org (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/index.php), and/or eatpoo.com (http://www.eatpoo.com/phpBB2/index.php) forums.
There are some professionals there.
Although I'm sure there are some of those professionals here as well...
One or two of those guys over there have just released their own books, like Jon Foster and Don Seegmiller(although the latter hasn't really come out yet).
If you ask here there, everywhere, someone professional is bound to answer. Couldn't hurt.
This(CGTalk) is by far the forum with the most members, so i'm surprised if you can't find the right people here.
Good luck anyhow. :)
(this turned out to be my first post here, btw... yay me! ;))

How rude,
Before moving into 3d/web I had 10 years Repro House and Prepress experience. I bet there is quite a lot of us around in here.
The only problems you will get when moving work between the two systems US/Europe is if you include Dotgain curves into any photography in photoshop.
The US tends to print everything working from negative plates with a much higher dotgain allowance than Europe where we use positive plates for printing.
US dotgain at the 50% mark can be as high as 30% which means in order to get 50% black the plate would have about 35% tone on it.
Europe will get between 15 and 20 % dotgain at 50% so on the plate their would be about 42% tone at 50.
None of this should matter if you leave all of you on screen settings to normal i.e don't allow for dot gain. Get the Repro House/Printer to use their RIP systems to make the dotgain allowances when the film or plates are imaged.
Thats the way we used to work as dotgain allowances are also different if the job is to be printed sheet fed or Web.
As far as making a cover image in painter goes, it fine.
your cover will probably be printed at 175 screen which means you need to image at 350 pixels per inch.
Colours - work in RGB the colourspace is 30 percent bigger than CMYK, a conversion can be done after, when doing the conversion look to get a good build up in the black i.e 95 black mid 60's for the other colours.

like i said: i had no doubt that some of you/us are professionals, nevertheless im very greatful for your links.
