View Full Version : Mac OpenGL Speedup
Gazzamataz 05-22-2006, 10:15 AM WOW - AT LAST - CAN't BELIEVE IT!!!
I only recently noticed the bench marks on Mash's 3DFluff website for Mac GPU scores had crept up on the new iMac DuoCores... I thought this must be people running Windows on them - but no!
It seems that as of April this year Apple have done something to speed realtime playback on the Macs - cool. Which version of the OS X did this happen 10.4.6? Didn't seem to make a fanfare of it.
Personally, I am well pleased been waiting for something like this for years.

It is restricted to R9.6 so the OSX 10.4.6 upgrade alone won't solve this. But very good news indeed (check out maxon R9.6 feature page to read more about this!).

You will need 9.6 in combination with a very recent version of OSX to get the huge speed bump, I can't remember exactly which version. Whenever apple announced their huge ogl speed increase with each update, they were kind of telling the truth. The bit they didn't point out was that it would require changes in software to take advantage of it, ie. all existing software would not see any difference.

Shame it's only Intel core mac's that get the speed boost though...

Its not; any recent Mac (last 3 years or so) with a recent version of OS X sees the speedup. Download the latest version of Cinebench to see if your system benefits...

I'm sure I read in the 9.6 addendum that the new version runs slower on PPC than on UB/Intel based Macs. It seemed to say (without saying) that the speed boost was only applicable to the newer macs. (mine's a 2004 G5) I must have read it wrong. But I am gonna boot up cinebench to see if anything's happened. It isn't very noticable if it has :(

The benefit is greater in the UB version than the PPC, but it applies to the UB version running on a PPC Mac also.
There is a marked speed boost in the UB version on my Dual 2.5 PPC G5 - just wish the plugins were all UB so I could make usse of it all the time.

I was about to give a link to show the different results, but a large black hole seems to have removed all the mac ogl scores from my database.... hmmm....
