We have recently begun pre-production on a privately funded animated feature film that we believe will be the first from South Africa, and we hope will motivate the animation industry in South Africa to further growth and development.

Our production's story is based in Africa, and many of the lead characters are birds.

As a result we are looking for a Technical Director/Programmer who can solve technical problems as they arise and implement the solutions into our production pipeline. We anticipate these would be varied in nature, but the primary challenge would be the modelling, animation or simulation, and rendering the feathers of the birds.

We are looking for people with ability and talent to implement a feathering system for our characters that will be able to handle issues such as feather placement, combing, collision detection and solving interpenetration between individual feathers and the skin surface, as well as animation deformations and rendering to a high quality at an optimum time.

Creating CG feathers, like water and hair effects, is one of those "holy grail" type of effects is something that is only now beginning to find its way into the world of animation, and we are determined to find a solution to this problem.

We are currently considering other animation packages and may use them if it is deemed necessary, but we would prefer if possible to implement a solution for Lightwave 3d as it is our primary animation package.

We are also interested in individuals who may have developed a similar solution for a different package and are able to port it to LW.

The applicant would need to have an excellent understanding and experience in high level programming in C++ or equivalent, for 3d graphics applications.
Experience writing plugins or scripting for 3d animation packages, particularly for Lightwave 3d, would be advantageous, but we are mainly looking for people with raw talent and a positive and enthusiastic approach to their work.
Local (South African) applicants would be considered first, but for the right person we would make necessary arrangements.
Duration of contract would be 1 year.
