View Full Version : A more efficient approach?
theOtherAdman 01-08-2003, 05:30 PM Hello all. I'm brand new to the forum and this is my first post. I've finally gotten around to educating myself to the workings of Cinema4d (XL7 for Mac OSX). My first of many questions (to come later) is about the model in the image below:
http://www.rendermind.com/cinema4d/cage.jpg
I created this "cage" starting from a box (which now makes up a corner) and extruded its sides to form a cage, then welded the points. I then dropped it into a Hyper NURBS object. Since I'm new to this, I figure there must be a more efficient, that is ... faster approach than what I used, in creating this type of model.
Any comments, tips or a point in the right direction to a tutorial online or a previous thread would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Adam

Welcome!
If you download the SDK plugins from Maxon's site you can use the free Atom plugin which does strutting automatically. There's also a free plugin call To Wire that does something similar. Try a search a Plugin Cafe.

AdamT - I may be completely off on this but don't both of the plugins you mentioned produce wire frame renders? I don't think that was his question.

atom doens't produce wireframe renders, it creates geometry along edges, like in the above image, you can set how large or small the "wires" are and how many sides they have, it also creates balls at teh ends. this will produce the same result.
however another thing you may want to check out is remotion ditools, (and tdem which is for the old particles and makes life easier). but ditools has a plug called tessa which will also allow you to create "wires" like in the above image.

you can do it in 1 minute without any plugins!
i used lightwave to create this but i think it also works in cinema

create a box
bevel
bevel
delete polys
merge
add geometry with knife tool
subdivide
done!
i hope this helps

yeah, this can be done on c4d like that too;
make cube
make editable
select all polys
extrude inner
extrude (negative value so it goes in)
delete those polys
select all polys
optimise
weight some edges to make the desired shape (or knife it like in the LW example above)
...upon trying, i cannot seem to knife it right, and it doesnt look right by weighting it...

Maybe worth noting for a larger scale version of what you're doing.
Not to bring up a sore subject but, you can do this with Jenna in version 7 (but not 8 - YET) (click here for more info) (http://www.bhodinut.com/home/products/jenna).
This is what you want to look at specifically: http://www.bhodinut.com/home/products/jenna/mesharray
It's a great plug-in - but it's not working under Cinema 8 yet.
How about.
Cube
Make editable
Select all polys
Extrude inner {to preference size} delete polys
Run "Make Thicker" plugin.
Chuck in hyper nurbs.
Stu.

AHH BEAT ME TO IT, i WAS GONNA SAY MAKE THICKER AS WELL.
for the sharper cornes I would do a slight extrude inner first and then a second extrude inner like in Kiwi's suggestion.

Ok . . check this out. I just found this in the version 8 manual last night and I thought of this thread.
You'll find this nice feature under the menu Objects/Modeling/Atom Array
Just drop your model into "Atom Array" (very Jenna like) and you're done! No steps involved! Nice eh?
