View Full Version : Matte Painting: My first Matt-Painting
Seven 01-08-2003, 04:41 PM After seeing the amazing work of people like henrik amougst others. I decided to give it a go myself.
So here is my first finished attempt at a matt painting. Ive had to reduce it in size because of the file / posting limits. So the quality isnt as good as it should be.
What do you think.

Its 2d actually, done in PhotoShop. Not as impressive anymore is it :) But glad you like it. I decided to post it here rather than in the 2d section, after all it is 'Finished Work' :)

Looks damn good to me!
But the aspect ratio is kind of weird. A little bit wider would be nice, so you can see more of the panorama. Espacially because thatīs the way we see our world.
But if you wanted it to be that way or if it should be a vertical pan shot, then itīs great. Just my opinion anyway.

Actually I intend to paint them wider, I didnt want to get to ambitious for my first attempt :) So something like this seemed perfect for my first go as it encompasses the intire view from the camera right up to the horizon, I now know I can paint it all to a certain degree.
Man thats really hard to explain :)

Looks really cool! Especially including the fact that it is your first attempt, which is really hard to believe!
Some questions:
Did you use photographs in your picture? I don't mean as reference, but as some other kind of source (layer you painted onto or cloned out of).
What size does the original picture have? I guess this is a much smaller version ;) Would be great to have a look at the big version!
Good work! Keep on rocking! :airguitar

"matte painting" means photorealistic paintings, mostly made to extend or enhance movie shots. some parts of rivendell in the lotr movies were matte painting for example (the valley in those panorama shots). hendrik is a great artist lurking around somewhere here ;P

hmmm this matte painting remind me something....hmmm
lets see a movie with small people carrying a jewel of somekind...
and also some creature with big ears (damn good archer)...the
king....the lord...ahhh bad memory.:annoyed:
if you want to check the real stuff visit yanick "he is good" dusseault website www.dusso.com (2nd line first row)
its the left center of the matte painting
like we say in france "baltringue"
Hm. I checked it and it's obvious Seven used dusseault's picture as reference, but he didn't just clone or copy it. That's nothing to blame IMO, eventhough it would have been nicer if he'd made it up without other's matte paintings.
Anyway, if you keep so close to your source image, it would have been fair to tell us, Seven.

Yes I will admit I used Dussos work as a reference, and I dont think thats wrong. To learn 3d modeling I looked at the work of people I admire and tried to replicated that. I took it apart and then found a way of putting it back together again.
So to learn how to paint matt paintings I did exactly the same. I looked at work I admired and then tried to replicated it.
I can assure you nothing of that image above is a c/p, i would NEVER do that. That is totally wrong. What I did was look at the image, listen to what people said about matt paintings. The fact that you have to paint an impression and let the eye fill in the details and tried to do one myself. I tried to paint one myself.
Now that I know how to do it I can go on to paint my own paintings. Its no more wrong than someon trying to make a 3d Gollum after watching TTT.
If you think thats wrong, and a bad way to learn then thats ur business. I dont.
I apologise, I should have said I used his work as reference in my original post. I didnt, it was a mistake.
