View Full Version : HDRI question
belly80naz 01-08-2003, 04:10 PM I've seen the new HDRI feature in XSI 3, in the video on Softimage.com educational. I've tried to use it with a simple image jpg or pic and it's work very fine, but, in the educational video (and in another program, like lightwave 3D 6 or +) the teacher use a .map image (in lightwave i see that I must use a .hdr file). My question is: what's the difference, and how can I create or find a .map file?

A .map file (not explained on Paul's site btw) is a floating-point 16-bit format.
16-bit files mean that the information stored there has a greater color depth than standard RGB images (wich are 8-bit).
Floating-point files mean that there are more than one value stored in the file for the same pixel. In the case of HDRI maps, there are many many images layered on top of each other that the renderer can choose from. If you open a .hdr file into HDRShop, press + and - to see all the images (representing different exposure levels) present in the file. Well-done HDRI maps can contain up to 50 images.
To create a .map file you have to use the imf_copy standalone that comes with XSI. Read the docs (Standalones books) to know how to convert .hdr files to .map.
Hope this helps
