Hey guys I just want to let you know that I am really into 3d modeling... i use 3d studio max and have made 2 pieces of art so far, you can look at them in my Portfolio (http://jmusto0223.cgsociety.org/gallery/)

Anyways, I am finishing up my junior year in high school right now and am looking at schools and they all need portfolios of artwork, mostly of what you have drawn, not only of things that you look at in real life, but creative works that you think of yourself using your imagination. Right now I really suck at drawing and couldnt draw anything for the life of me  and would like to get into drawing so I have somewhat impressive work in my portfolio.

The point of this thread is wondering where to start, I wouldn't really want to start with something boring, but if that is what it takes then I will. I want to be able to be good enough where I can draw whatever I want like fantasy characters and the like (I am inspired by the warcraft III concept art (http://blizzard.com/war3/conceptart/) like the Demon Hunter, Tauren, and Mountain King). I would start by drawing on my own, but I feel like if I do that im not learning anything and I won't be able to learn/grasp any techniques that maybe tutorials would give you. Anyways, I'll end this thread here, if anyone can help me and show me where to begin to drawing as far as tutorials and such (preferably not having to buy any books :D), I would very much appreciate it.

Jordan,

The best place to start is with this thread, which will tell you all the forums to do with 2D art here on CGTalk:

FORUM PRIMER: FAQ - I'm interested in Drawing / Painting - Where Do I Start? (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=357772)

I moderate the Anatomy Forum, and you are always welcome to join there.

In particular, I might recommend:

From there we can help you figure out what might be the next best steps.

Cheers, :)

Hi jordon,

I went throught the same problem, when i found out that art colleges require you to give them slides of your drawings i freaked out. I wasn't ever good at drawing, but during my winter break i just sat down and started drawing my butt off. The colleges that i looked into didn't require me to have "Abstract" stuff, they mostly wanted to see if i was able to draw things through my eyes. And over my winter break i would take pictures of objects with my digital camera, print them out, and start drawing. To me this was alot easyier then looking at the object while you draw, but meh everyone has their own style. I kept drawing 247 and after the 2 and half weeks i was able to make 13 pretty good drawings, and with that i got accepted to RIT, SVA, Pratt , AI washington, and bloomfield college. But the point i'm getting at is you should just start drawing and drawing, reading on how to draw will help, but no article will automaticlly make you into a good drawer. It all comes down to hard work, and how much time you put into it. I know you can do it dude!!
