Which 3d max version do you got? The 3dsmax BIBLE series are the only ones I can recommend. The manual that comes with 3dsmax is pretty good to.

I like the Coriolis books. They have Max in Depth and Max FX.

I don't know if they have anything for Max 5 yet, but those are my personal favs.

I had the Bible for Max 3 and it did help me a couple of times so I guess that one was worth it too.

Those book are really nice and have a lot of great stuff on basic theory. I think everyone involved in this art form needs to get away from the whole Maya, Max, etc....thing and just take a look at the basic concepts.

A lot of us are self taught and haven't been able to go to a formal school, so books like those that give a lot of theory may give greater insight into the thought process behind an effect rather than "push this ". If you have a strong theoretical foundation, you will probably be much better at problem solving. Sometimes that is really all that stands between a good 3D artist, and a great one. Take a look at some of the hotshots on this forum and I'll bet that the top guns have spent many an hour looking at theory behind textures and whatnot.

Iwouldn't be surprised if Texturing Goddess herself has stared at an apple or other objecs and looked at how the light wraps around it, rather than just worrying about U.V's and bump maps.

No more preaching...
