Here's an image I completed about a month ago. The sky is from Bryce and the composite done in Photoshop. The 3D modelling, texuring and rendering were done in (wait for it)... Strata 3d :wip:
I was going for a kind of Airfix illustrative look.

it certainly has the illustrated look, good job. the explosion could use some more work though

i agree about the explosions.
also,
i would motion-blur the props much more.
and i'm having a hard time figuring out where the sun is... i see light coming from explosions, and light reflected from the ocean... but i'm unclear as to where the actual sun (and primary light) is coming from...

nice look, though

thanks for the replies. Yeah, the explosions aren't finished yet, and are really just roughed in. I got so busy last month I never got around to finishing it (as usual).
As regards the sun or primary light source, the simple answer is that there is none intentionally. I've found that in a lot of illustrations done for model kits that the light is more or less omnipotent, lending to a very distinctive look, but more importanty showing the aircraft off in as clear a manner as possible. This does detract from the depth, but I think has a certain charm.

Will finish explosions / details on sea and repost soon.

Regarding the guns: This model was made from the clearest blueprint I could get my hands on, but I'm not that sure about it's acuracy. However, I've since found some great photographic reference and the guns look (almost) right. The cockpit is a little off though. I think the blueprint I worked from might have been a Seafire.

Here's some more work on the original. Explosions are difficult to paint, no?
Have I gone too far with these, are they too overpowering?
Let me know what you think.

thanks for the images, they're great. I really think the spitfire is one of the best looking planes ever produced. Beautiful shape.

Felix: no, depends on mark

Mk.I: 8 .303s
Later marks had 20-mm cannon and less machine guns
