View Full Version : printing question and painter7
Im making the cover for a book, and the client requested a waterpainting. Now in painter 7 since they changed the water tools they are really slow :( at least in hi resolutions.
So how many dpi:s do i need? i know lineart works at 150 (at least for this size) but how about colors?
Anyone?

150 DPI for linework ???!!! :shame:
Nonono, for your linework use 600 or more DPI's
For any rasterized work (doesn't matter howmuch colors), u should goo with min. 300DPI.
But since that results in large images and u seem having some problems with your computers speed. I think u can make an exception and use 150DPI's, but that's pretty low compared to the standards... But it'll look good enough...
That reminds me, in the old days, when I encountered some performance problems, I used a printing resolution of 200DPI, but that was for non-important work.
A bookcover is pretty important, so if u can, u should go for min 300DPI...
Hope that helps
but ive quite happily sent and received pics (mostly small illustrations though) to the presses and been as happy when i received them. Strange.
But thanks. that was exactly the kind of answer i was hoping for.
or maybe not actually. when i think about it ;)
Thing is my computer is pretty fast (dual 1,8ghz, 1gb ram) it should be able to cope quite happily with the water colour effects in painter i think. Maybe its an xp thing?.
i guess ill have to paint in low res, rescale and touch up on the watercolour areas.
Makes for a pretty bad workflow.:annoyed:
edit:
ive got another question, if i use 600dpi how should that relate to my picture size? Should i be 1:1 or 2:1 ? or 1½:1?
