What a fun topic! I really enjoyed doing this one. Great entries so far as well.

Xott - What a great first posting! I really like your eye for composition. I need to take some pointers from you since I just put mine right in the middle lol. Also, you have lovely shading as well. Nice and soft.

Mats - Nice work as well! Your piece has great movement to it. Overall, nice composition as well. You may want to try experimenting with different types of brushes. There are some great links in these forums. =)

Hi all. I've been a huge fan of the DSF for a while now and I finally made time for some sketching. I hope to learn a lot from all the talented people that post here (such as Howling Horse, great stuff). Here's a yellow flower (I don't know what kind though).

~50 minutes; ArtRage; OpenCanvas; GIMP for post-processing; Photo reference used.

An interesting change of pace from my usual...

CoffeePowered - I like the composition, the background is detailed enough to be interesting w/o overpowering. Colors are bight and effective

Call0ps - Excellent use of brush texture. It really makes the petals pop and adds a nice flow to the entire scene.

HowlingHorse - a nearly monochrome pallete is an interesting twist. The water droplets add verasimilitude.

rawwad - I like the limited palette here. The scatchy shading is a good effect and lends an ominous overtone to the picture. Focal blur is also nice.

Aurella - good colors and nice background. Veinwork on the largest petals is nice, as is the bright yellow center.

Mats Gustafsson - nice use of transparency, brushwork gives an impressionistic feel. The white background works here but is bordering on too much.

xott - simple and effective. I like the contrast of colors between the flower and the background. Background is well shaded.

Thanks for the comment Gaunt Man! I really dig yours as well. The pattern on the flower really looks interesting, like something you might find on a piece of clothing or something.

I just noticed that there are two other DSF new comers to this thread... that's kinda weird, isn't it? Perhaps Call Ops, Xott, and myself are clones! O_o

Or maybe not. o_-

Well, this was such a great thing to pop up, because I have been wanting to practice flowers and stuff over the summer and this was a great way to get started. I'm rather pleased with how this came out, I hope guys like it too. :D

Painted in Photoshop in about fourty-five, fifty minutes. Obviously, a photo ref was used.

Wow, so many cool sketches! I've been lurking around the forum for quite a while and thought it was time to get down to work. Here's my sketch. I'm new to Painter, but absolutely love the dynamics of it so far. This was done in Painter IX and took 52 minutes. Thanks for looking!
