This is my first head (a lot of people still think this can't be the 1st one, for them there's my wip here http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=328316#post328316 ), it took me a couple months or even more. Thanks to the wip forum and to the #cgtalk people who helped me during the hard process of getting photorealism. Thanks to Renč Morel, Ulf Lundgren, Francisco Cortina, Jualian_J and Stuzzi for giving me inspiration. An extraspecial thank to Leigh who helped me a lot in the wip forum and expecially to Alessandro Baldasseroni (aka Eklettica) who helped me with his preciuous advices and his strenuous support during our mIRC chats on #cgtalk, i dedicate to you the name of this character, you're great. Everything made in CINEMA 4D. I hope you all like it.

Superb work.

Do you have plans for the addition of hair or the body?

ThirdEye

Sad: i have to say that all my work has been difficult because of one thing in particular: i had a head in my mind (this isn't inspired to photos or stuff like that, it's all made by eye) and i wanted to gain that shape, now i'm really satisfied because it's exactly what i had in mind

D.Phoenix: no, i want to start another head, i need modeling, modeling, modeling and then modeling again ;)

Thanks for the quick replies guys :wavey:

Beautiful Work Thirdeye! Yeah, it's an amazing job you've done. One small thing to the finishing touches, try blurring the top of his head, as you've done with the ears. It should help to blend him more into the picture. (of course it's just nit picking, but I assume your the kinda guy that feeds off it.)

Cheers
Steve

The problem with the blur is the crappy quality of the jpeg, probably i'll find some web space to upload a pic with higher jpg quality settings

Thanks for the dedication, i really appreciated that

Now the sweater looks really good, the little wrinkles on shoulders are really armonic with the whool texture and you also fixed the stretching problems on the collar.
The less blurred background works fine.

With patience and efforts you managed to produce a real great piece of cg artwork.

My compliments, and stars :)

Eklettica: no problem for the dedication to you, you deserve it  Thank you for all and for the 5 stars :D

HapZungLam: I really wanted to increase the displacement but then i looked to a sweater of mine and i realized that the textile is soft and doesn't create great wrinkles because it's lit on the flesh.

Shoey: thank you very much :)

As I already said: this is veeerry cool, man!
Even though I feel the urge to slap you around a bit! This really is your first head??? :argh:
Damn good! Did you use Naam's great ChanLum?

Greetings,

Thank you Atmos_Fear, every shape of every element of this head was meant to be like this in my head, i worked till i obtained what i head in mind. Now it's time to start a female model, he feels so lonely

XerC: thank you very much for commenting my FIRST (yes XerC) head. No, i didn't use chanlum, the rendertimes were to high for my taste, 5-6x circa. I used the same trick of Stahlberg skin tutorial, it worked quite well imho. :)

XerC
01-08-2003, 06:42 PM
Okay okay... I believe you...;)
The skin looks good, but it still has a *slight* touch of plastic.
One other thing I just noticed is the lower eye lid having a short very linear area right under the pupil, where it should be even a bit more curved to the outside, due to the eyeball is a bit beveled (hm.. hope you get what I mean) there...
If you'd fix this, it yould be really perfect!

Regards,
XerC

the head's come a long way.. however, mouth and eyes still need work..., especially the upper lip.. needs little bulging out on the outer edges..

the rest seems pretty solid, i like the texture

The face is really good, but the lighting doesn't fit the background very well. The face has quite yellow tones while the background has a more blueish outdoor lighting. The head would probably fit in better if the light from above was stronger since the sky is quite bright.

I'm not sure, but wouldn't the background get even more blurred when the depth of field is short enough to make the ears blur..?

Anyhow, great job... just a few steps left to make him fit in perfectly...

I have followed this thread and the making of, Man incredible work. I would never be able to take a piece like you did from being good to fantastic, with the patience and perserverance you have shown over the course of this project. That is to be commended. I was wondering what the final lighting setup was that you finished with? Fantastic work.

Thank you very much guys, the most useful tutorial i had is the Syomka thread on the wip gallery, he's incredible. Not to mention Steven Stahlberg skin tutorial in the texturing forum. ;) The final light setup was made of 2 area lights (soft shadows) and a GI skydome with hdri.

Great model. My only critique would be that the bump map on the lower lips needs to blend in a little better towards the top and bottom of the lip. Right now it looks like the bump map has the wrinkles set to the same depth all the way from the top to the bottom.

your character feels like he is from a sci-fi world like the dune.
he kind of reminds me of the bad guy from the latest star trek movie,
was he an inspiration?

Excellent head, Thirdeye! Its brilliant! Features aside it reminds me slightly of David Beckham when he used to have his hair like that. I thinks its even better due to the fact you didn't follow any reference at all. I will soon be continuing my self-portrait head and might even go no-ref like you did, because being constrained to a reference image is quite annoying, especially when I have a final look in mind anyway. I hope you could answer a question or two in mIRC to help me out if I get stuck down the road...
Again, congrats! Now wheres that award....

Ohhh i give you inpsiration?:surprised
i'd like to be inspired like u to do that kind of work!!
however the bone of the nose is too "hard",smooth its shape.
to me,the plastic apearance is due to the specular and the "bone structure".try to localiz better the specular area.the eye disturb me...hum it seems to be welded on the face, the eyelids ought to be deeper.
the angle of view of your shoot and the backg are totaly different, eye is not used to have this kind of Abnormality(the same for the tint)!!
good job dude!:airguitar

I find it funny that your head is up front the second time around and no choice award awarded to you?!?!

I guess lil dragon must be missing this link altogether. :( But thou nare feel down. The telent is yours to keep and no one NO ONE can take that away from you!

I like the texture work on the head. I must say your model has a very unique features and that makes it more plausible. I like him alot.

Cant wait for him to be animated!

5 stars!

Thank you very much derelict, it's such a satisfaction to have a good feedback from cgtalk users, it means i've done a good work with this 1st head. And about awards... they don't count too much, the only important thing is to make a good job and be satisfied for what you've done. :wavey:

it's cool for a first attempt, but i'll be the jackass anyway.

Yes you're wrong, but no problem. I wrote many and many times in these cgtalk pages that my inspiration is Renč's work. I love his works and they are my 1st source of inspiration. I never hide the Dick model by Renč is my favorite cg character ever, and it surely inspired me A LOT. But look at the wip thread, you'll see that i came to this shape passing by many and many other shapes. Another thing: that pic was released by Renč when my modeling work was already finished and his previous versions of Dick were quite different, i know for sure his character is still a wip. I'm only a newbie, the only way i have to learn is looking at what others did because they surely made better things than mine. This character is a mix of a lot of characters, trust me, I stared at FF general Hein for hours, same thing for Eichan model by Stuzzi and Julian Johnson boy model ;) . If you're interested to my 2nd head (no direct inspirations this time, probably because i'm starting learning more) look at this: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36199

01-30-2003, 01:57 PM
hey!
Sorry but i've read the others threads.
I won't waste my time and yours repeating things.

Inspiration is not copy.
Here, i think we're close to a copy.
It's not pejorative.
i don't know about your wip, sorry. I just know the face of this "Dick" guy for a while now, so it's hard for me to figure out how you could have done it before or meanwhile.

Anyway, that's not the problem, it's well done.

I'll be attentive to your next thread.

ThirdEye
01-30-2003, 02:29 PM
Everybody's free to think what he prefers, i don't have any problem with this. You say it's a good copy? Ok i take it as a compliment, my goal was realism, if i came close to a Renč's work with a 1st head, well, i can be really satisfied. ;)

e338
01-30-2003, 04:46 PM
for sure you can be satisfied!
You did it necely.
I just feel to say that you ought to take some distance with your influences in general. that's all.

GREAT JOB MAN!!!!!!

A little bit thing: probably you have to spend more time on the eyes of your model. Your second head seems to be more defined, and the eyes-polygons are much more cleaned up. Take care of the ears, maybe you have to render them "softer".
