Hi,

I was just wondering if there were any C4D and Messiah users who could comment on the latest version, and how well the two operate together now. I am thinking of switching from MotionBuilder and just wanted some assurance that Messiah is a practical alternative.

Thanks,

Hi RdStudio,

I am a newbie at Messiah. I use Realsoft 3D so have no experience with Cinema BUT I would suggest you download the demo of Messiah Studio and have a look at the manual / help file. To do this just open the demo, right click the File Tab top left and launch Docs option. In the Contents on left expand the GENERAL INFO Folder, then USING MESSIAH WITH 3RD PARTY APPS. Here you will find a page on Messiah and Cinema 4D integration,

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Aidan

Well, the manual will tell you that there is a messiah plugin for Cinema 4D...
But it never worked correctly.

So you should better use .mdd point baked displacement (now native to messiah) together with the plugin from Christopher Lutz for Cinema 4D:

of course you could spend a few dollars more & get M:Studio & use it for animation & rendering, then all you need to do is model in C4D....considering how cheap the workstation version is I really can't understand why anyone would get Animate even if you hardly use the renderer.

Thanks for the links. It seems that it is a practical solution. What is the support like for users? C4D doesn't seem to be a big chunk of their user base, and it doesn't seem that the C4D plugin has been uodated since v8.5.

Thanks guys!

I can't speak for C4D users but support for Messiah in general is getting better & better. There's been several free updates since I bought it a year ago & most of them have been over the past few weeks! Any glitches or bugs are getting addressed very quickly & the users here are very helpful.

I'm in the same boat as you were with the Big MB Ripoff. I use C4D also. I was just wondering how you were getting on with Messiah and does it work well with C4D.

I'm a bit puzzled because on the web site under animation host connections: it say motion using Lightwave and deformation under other apps. Does this mean that the mesh is deformed for animation or are the bones animated through some kind of motion data which is passed onto the host application?

My finger is poised over the credit card trigger.

Unlike MB, messiah passes only mesh deformation data via .mdd format. No bones about it. ;)

Thus far I'm very happy with mStudio. Certaintly rigging and animating are the easiest I have come across. There is a C4D plugin that allows you to bring the animation directly into C4D supplied with messiah. Works just fine as far as I can tell so far. Effectively you can use messiah as a plugin from C4D or as a stand alone then hook the animation into C4D later. You simply save the model from C4D out as a wavefront file and messiah can read that. It then brings the animated model back into C4D for rendering in your scene. mStudio also has a very capable renderer as well, although I am having some trouble getting decent results (not used to it as yet).

There is also an option to bring across point level animation through an mdd file, but I haven't explored that as yet.

I am on C4D 9.6 and all is running fine. I haven't done extensive tests as yet (I've been too busy exploring the rigging and animation capabilities in messiah), but I am certaintly preferring it to Motionbuilder. Much more flexible solution.

If you do go ahead and purchase I would also recommend the training CD's from Joe Cosman. Outstanding training which will get you up to speed quickly. It is a deep program and these certaintly helped me to get to grips with it!

Thank guys . I'm just going to try out the demo for a bit but I think there is a very good chance I'm going to purchase it.

I went crazy and bought Messiah the price was too good to miss. Which of the Joe Cosman CD's do you recommend I start with and where is the best place to buy them? I'm in the UK.

I would start with Rigging 2 and Animation 1, I have Rigging 1 and 2 but I miss Animation 1 and will buy it. There is only one place to buy them and it is trough www.joecosman.com and his printer cafepress (it worked great for me and I live in Sweden)

BTW. I thinking of buying c4d and wonder if there is a way of baking out a .obj sequence (or similar format) from it, if you use its procedural animation tools like the path extrution, explosion, etc.

Welcome :)

you may also want to have a look at www.zoogono.com where all the known plugins are linked to - mdd support for Cinema 4D being one of them...
