Use a skylight and a spotlight for the sun.

hi,
if u r using 3ds max version 7 then why worries. Use day light system.. make sure u bring the muliplier down to 1 or 2. it is attached with a sky light along with it.. so u get the soft shadows as well as ray traced sharp shadows. The most important thing is .. activate the lighttracer with 250 samples buy default.. if u r rendering a high resolution image then try increasing that. it ll eat ur time but it is worth while.
