View Full Version : Syflex For cloth
AWAKE 01-08-2003, 06:31 AM I was wondering if anyone is using the Syflex cloth plugin for maya. There was a review of it on chchannel a while back. It went over pretty basic tests, but I wanted to know if its as strong as the website says.

Hi,
I saw syflex running on maya 4.5 and I found it absolutly wonderful !
It's very very fast for a cloth simulator, and very realistic. I'm not sure but I think they developped syflex for FF the movie.
According to me it's the best cloth plugin for now.

Good to know.
I've been using maya's cloth, but the workflow is heavy handed. I'm dancing around all sorts of problems.

Oh yeah, how transarent is the plugin? Is there an External app or setup window?

I've only used it for a short while too, but as they say around here it's 'the dog's bollocks'. Er, meaning it's REALLY impressive.
It integrates perfectly with the Maya interface, you simply get another menu and various new icons in the viewports for cloth object, colliders, forces and so on. If you're familiar with Maya's cloth, it'll take you about 2 minutes to master Syflex. It's that easy. Similar method of working to Maya's cloth (model, drape, simulate, set initial state then make a cache for rendering), except you just use any old object as a cloth object instead of faffing around with panels and stitching. I know you can do this with Maya's cloth but that gets VERY slow if it's not made of panels.
There's lots of control over enveloping, making it easier to get rid of twitching and vibrations in the cloth, the constraints are elegantly done and animatable, and it's easy to make things actually look and act like 'stiffer' materials e.g. denim or leather. I always found Maya's cloth only really worked well for light materials such as silk or cotton, heavier materials were never very convincing.
Oh, and the speed. By God the speed... astounding. One of the things they suggest is to tweak a cloth object's settings without a collision object present, so it's like dropping a garment onto a clothes hanger. It was doing this REAL-TIME on a 2gHz Athlon with a 4500 poly object. Now that to me is pretty bloody quick :surprised
Obviously it's very expensive, but for even a small production house I think it would pay for itself very quickly simply through the time saved in simulating. And you only actually need one license to do the sim since it comes with another 'free' (non-editing) version of the plugin that lets any number of machines render from the saved cache files. Smart or what?
Syflex: From what I've seen of it, that's a 10 out of 10 from me!
Wabo.
P.S. wonder if they could license it and put it in Maya 5 Unlimited? Now that would be a killer

LOL! I wouldn't mind working in sales for a product like Syflex - it pretty much sells itself :) All you'd have to do is let the Maya users play with it for a while, and stand by with a net to catch their jaw when it drops :D
