Hi every one.
I'm a new member and this is my first post here.
First sorry for my poor english, i'll try to use only simple sentences ;-)
I'm french, active on the frenchC4D forum, and i started to work on this challenge 1 month ago but was obliged to interrupt it because of a priority-for-money job...

So... concept and images, as soon as i understand the submitting system ;-)...

The concept of the project:
My first idea was to confront the intimity of a romantical scene ( lovers having a cup of tea) to a huge, vertical and choking city.
I say "was" because i decided few days later to change the position of the guy for two reasons: first his position, drinking at the window, was not very good for the composition of the entire image. And secundo these scene was not evoking "The journey begins...".
So the guy will now leave by air with a "cable ladder" (is it the good word?)...
For the city, i wanted something no datable, but no futuristic or high-tech. Reference is of course the film "Metropolis" of F.Lang, and either the work of Schuitten&Petter (Belgium Comic Artists).
But let's start for the begining...

Well... This first image is a very basic concept sketch just look for the best camera angle . The challenge is to have in one image a sort of romantical close-up on the foreground, and a very large and vertical vison of the city behind.

I started to model very simple and low-poly buildings, details will be paint paint later...

Assembling the city...
It's something like playing like a child ;-)
At this stade i have to decide definitively of the position and angle of the camera.
The sky is here for ref of course, it will change later...

For the texturing of the city, i have decided to work both in C4D and Photoshop. The base of the texture is mapped in C4D, and details, elements and other are added in photoshop...

Here the first left buildings...

The first right buildings...

A this time i don't modify the original light. Just adding Úlements and details.

Near the end of the street...
Just for fun (it will be behind the guy), a funicular to reach the tower ;-)

This is really nicely textured and modeled! Will the person be flying though?

Ok, let's finish the texture of the tower.
At this stade the image is very flat. We keep that fot later. Time to begin the charachers...

The hardest thing is to find a beautiful girl who is perverse enough to accept to have a mesh painted on the face ;-)

I wanted for a while to test this way for modeling a face: i think its a good way to work fast with precision...

Fantastic buildings. I really like the way you've designed them. I also like the way you've combined them - lots of competing architectural 'statements', resulting in a crowded, imposing streetscape - perfect for depicting so much ageing street architecture in so many cities. You've done a wonderful job at creating the 'choking city' that you described in your concept. No crits from me.

Next step: rigging the girl and looking for attitude... Not very easy, does she has to say "go away and never come back!", or "Don't leave, i'll die if you go!", or "I'll will wait for you all my life, my name is Penelope!" ;-)

This image is the Ambiant Occlusion pass.

Wombal and MDavid: thanxs for comments! :-) No flying characters, but acrobat, yes ;-)

Texturing the girl... Some defaults of modeling appears on the close-up (nose, stretched face), they were modified later.

Let's go for the guy. Since this image the design has changed a little: no more aviator style.
The guy suspended to the cable correspond to the first idea, but didn't match with the rest of image and was abandonned.
(The shoes have changed too, they were horrible... :-( )

Difficult choices...
Looking for the position of the characters. The position of the guy is quite important for the "story" of the image.
On the left, he seems to abandon the girls, and happy to do so. Which is for me not very "interessant": sort of banal sex story. But the position is very dynamic and i like the impression that he climbs on the buildings.
On the right: he's more passive. What's the word for that?... He "undergoes" the situation? It's almost a rapt. We don't know if he is happy or not to go.
So I finally decided for the right position.

Final position and texturing for the guy...
I decided to use more "dense" colors for the clothes, in order to separate the character from the backgound...

Now we have to assemble the characters and the city...
Lots of work in photoshop to re-built the light and equilibrate all the the different elements.

At this stade we are now synchronized ;-)...
Thanx for your interest, comments and crits...

Sorry to have entered so late after the beginning of my work :-)

really interssant concept and composition.
To crit a little I find the latter a little to twist on the upper part.

Working on a more contrasted picture. Much better i think...

Youglion: thanx a lot! App for application? I use Cinema4D and Photoshop.
Authentic: I finaly decided to keep the twist of the ladder like that, because I think it adds dinamics and some of "vertigo"... Thanx for ur interest!

This morning, it's the day. That was planed, they both knew that, he has to leave. Perhaps he's happy to do so; he will for the first time see beyond the walls... But...
What does she think? She's happy for him? Does she say "Have fun" or "Please don't go"? Does she try to catch him at the last second?
Interpretation of this last glance is open... ;-)

Aeron,

Cool work. Very sophistacted modeling and composition. The architectural details are remarkable, and the story told is mysterious, quirky and practically slapstick comedy, all in one.

And you managed this in only two pages! :banghead: No fair. :p

Fantastic to see for the first time.

Perhaps the man is flying away with some loot from the judges. :buttrock:
