View Full Version : Apologies for the newbie question about Transforms.
mr farhall 05-19-2006, 11:50 AM I have been looking at rhino for modeling of packs - Fed up with xsi's inability to tackle some of the issues that go with this type of task. However...
Is it possible to set the xforms of object numerically within rhino? Do curves, sufaces and the like have centres? So far it would seem that if i shift something around i then cant get it back to 0,0,0.
Thanks in advance

im not familiar with xsi but every curve in rhino has a mid snap.its probably very different because you work with curves and surfaces in rhino. you can always select a point or end and move it to 0,0,0 but im not sure what your goal is ,so Im not sure how to answer.

Hello spincad. Yeah, it's like mr farhall was saying. Rhino is a bit different. You have to turn on "Osnap", which is the object component snap in Rhino. Then you would check the midpoint checkbox. Then, when you pick one of the transform functions from the transform menu, it will allow you to transform around the midpoint. If you want to transform on the object's bounding box center, that's a different matter. Though it's a feature I use often in XSI, it's not something I use when building surfaces in Rhino. I guess that's because there's also a focus on animation in XSI. At any rate, the way I would do bounding box operations is by choosing "Analyze" from the main menu and the "Bounding Box". Make sure you have your object selected and a bounding box will appear around it. Then create a cross hairs by snapping from the center of the bottom face to the center of the top face and then snapping from the center of one of the side faces to the opposite side. Finally, create a point at the center where those lines intersect and you will have your object center. If you know you're going to be translating your object often, you can group that point to your object and it will stick with it all the time. Perhaps there's an easier way to go about doing this, but I never use that type of transformation in Rhino because you have more detailed tools at your disposal. Hope this helps.

Do you actually mean that you wish to model arrays of objects (packs)?,or do we be talkin wolves here?
polar array is available.array along curve,or surface, the option to space things out numerically using array is an option.
-yes numerical transforms are in rhino...really that rhino command line is there for this sort of thing.
-numerical transforms are slow, slow when snaps work fine.
-pivot points/base points /rotation stems are whatever and whatever you want it to be by clicking anywhere in 2d/3d space.
-aligning object to another is an option somewhere ..then again snap will snap to an object
anyway if the option is choosen.
make a point at zero.
find center of object by its group/combined bounding box and original object
snap on.
snap to zero point.
...............................uh okay my eyes are tired ,same as what he said above^^^^
yikes.
cheers.:)
