View Full Version : Marker Piece
Creepstown 01-08-2003, 02:41 AM Heres a marker piece I did for my second thread. Ref used, 5 various tonal pens. I don't normally use direct reference but this was a learning piece as I'm trying to get better at markers. Overall i'm pleased with it except for the streaky goodness on the left side of the pic near her arm. Comments and Critique are welcome.

Nicool, Zanith, thank you very much. Markers are indeed a hard medium but hopefully I'll get better in due time. I just wish more people would post marker work on this forum. Its such an under-appreciated medium and I always look foward to it when its shown on cgtalk. Check out my website, I've got a few more marker pics if you wanna check em out.

It's an All Saints chick, right?
Anway, really nice work - I particularly dig the folds in the cloth.
2 minor crits:
1) I'd say the edges below her breasts are too dark - It seems like you've tried to exaggerate the firmness of her breasts - which isn't really necessary with a babe like this :).
2) God nows you're a lot hotter than me with markers, but comparing your work to OTHER marker works I've seen, I think you could practice the soft gradients... but then again, this may be due to a count of only 5 markers... maybe the other marker drawings I've seen were made using 20 markers...
Actually I also want to say something about her face, but I don't really know what to say, other than "face recognition is a bitch!" ;)

- Jonas

Jussing, right on! I've been waiting for critique like this. Don't get me wrong, everyones compliments have been much appreciated, but I really wanted honest critique as well.
The breasts thing was more of a personal preference. When it comes to lighting, I prefer extreme contrasts to punch out the figure. I think it was called Tenebrism back when i was in Art College.
Practicing smoother gradients is something I definitely want to accomplish, but I've only got 5 markers at my disposal. Those things get expensive, so I'll have to make due with what i've got. The original drawing looks alot better, but scanning markers seem to dull them out for some reason. It loses the magic when it goes digital.
This is indeed one of the All Saints girls, and yes, Facial Recognition is a harsh mistress. In comparison to the reference pic, the face I did is longer and looks more like Rachel from S Club 7. In the ref pic, she's looking down more and head is tilted more towards the bottom. I still have troubles drawing faces/heads.
So thanks for your honest critique, It was very helpful and hopefully my next piece will be alot better.
