Aaah, Dwarrowdelf!
Looking cool so far, although I think those pillars should be tapering slightly :)

Thanks Leigh!
I suck at texturing. I cant get the texture to correctly go on the columns. I'm using maya. Anyone have tips?

1. of all ... nice start !
2. add some detail to the closer collums .. some pieces of rocks which fell off and now lieing on the ground .....
3. Lightning is essential !! use GI ( if u use maya go and get Mental Ray 4.5 its free !)
4. do some texturing tuts ;) i got myself with texturing my current wip :)
post updates !

thanks
im gonna do those details.
i know lighting is important, i just suck at it :annoyed: I was using GI for a while (Maya 4.5 uses Mental Ray 1.5; im using Maya 4, i can't use it, already tried it)
im trying to find some good texturing tuts, but alas, to no avail.

as for GI
try http://www.3dvirtualight.com it's isn't as easy to use as MR but well its GI :) or try the gi_Joe script from pixho
as for the texturing .. just search the net !
http://www.maya3d.dk/links/tutorials/
thats a pretty good start i think !
keep updating ;)
ps:
"but alas, to no avail" what does that mean ?

hey, Clondike, good start there :)
The last render looks overlit though.
If I were to lit a scene like that, Iwould not use GI though, in most cases it lacks atmosphere.
About textures.
Just put some planar projectons for each side of the pillar and or use procedurals on them.
Make some different versions of the same texture so the pillars look slightly different from one another.
have fun!

Hey all!
Maglok: Thanks, textures will be the last thing sorry:shrug:
Joril: The use of GI will be temporary, just so i can see the whole scene when i test render :applause:. Now, i tried those things, just that i need to get the texture to look ok, but they get distorted cause the each pillar is a single object, so the texture is killed in the process:scream:
any ideas?

Hey Clondike... you need to be more patient...
I like your approach and I also like your props. But you need to smooth them and make them look more metallic. I'd also break out some pieces of the colums to make them look old. And by the way (cough cough), there's another tiny prop called Balrog, where is he  ??? :surprised
Like your work

You might want to just add a few source lights in the foreground. That way the background will look like it extends further back because of the darkness.
Like Gandalf's staff/Boromir's torch lighting the area around them only.
Plus this will add nice deep long shadows off your pillars.

hey everyone!
Tommi: patience... yes... i've heard of that...:D . I will modify those columns. About the Balrog... I'm not goin to model it, theres a guy in this thread (rage) thats modling it, im hoping we could team up :applause: Thanks man!
Fingolfin: Thanks for the tip! Here's the product! Looks better me thinks

i like it ! ..... well at least the areas where the light is cause the shadows are extremely odd ! fix that and show where the light is coming from !
like the slight glow on the collums
