View Full Version : Zbrush and?
NextExile 05-18-2006, 08:07 PM Ive been looking around for quite a bit and noticed that many choose to render their, Zbrush creations so to speak, in special programs like MentalRay. My question is, is it worth it? What are the advantages and disadvantages of rendering in software other than Zbrush. Also, which rendering software is better?
Thanks in advance.

The first thing you want to do is look at your wallet. Once you figure out how much you want to spend, then you can shop around. Personally I use Lightwave because it has an excellent renderer and for the price, you can't beat it.
Zbrush's strength really isn't in it's rendering, but detailing and texturing. If you are composing a scene in Zbrush you have to pose, then drop each model to the canvas which then becomes a 2 1/2 D picture ( weird, I know ). That's fine until you want to make some changes or change your camera angle, then you have to go back and re-drop all of your models again.
Plus you are limited in your lighting and effects that you can use. With an external renderer you have far more options available with lighting, volumetrics, camera settings, etc. which is far superior in my opinion.
Zbrush functions like a canvas, but with depth. Once you think of it in those terms, you can see how that a full 3D scene invironment could have many more options availavble.

Thank you for your input, im really new at 3D modeling or even painting, going from designing layouts to modeling aint such an easy thing. once again thanks for your input.
One more question tho, whats the difference between MentalRay and Lightwave?

Mental ray is a renderer.. lightwave is a modelling / animation / rendering package

So basically Lightwave has more features? Yet, if comparing the rendering quality of both, is it much different? Noticable with a "naked eye"?
Thanks in advance.

LightWave is the software just as 3ds Max is software they both render/ model e.c.t but use different render cores to produce the final result.
Lightwave uses it own render core as far as im aware ,where as 3ds max uses metal ray. Lightwave and metal ray cant realy be compared as they are completely different from each other for what they actualy are Software package V Renderer.
