View Full Version : Light Tracer Question

Hey everyone, I had a question about using light tracer. For some reason its not affecting the shadows the way I thought light tracer did. I have set up a scene with simple background and a sphere in the center. I set up a plane for the base with a matte/shadow texture applied. I then used two simple omni lights with the attenuation changed to attempt to fake the way I thought the shadows should look.

I have 4 diferent pictures to show you what I was experimenting with.

1 - the first render I used raytraced shadows and the effect is rather ugly as you can see. the shadows are too hard

2 - same lighting setup as 1 but I just moved the sphere to show that the shadows arent behaving like I thought they did in light tracer

3 - same default position as the first render only this time I changed the shadows to a shadow map. I like this render the best, but as you can see in the 4th render once I move the sphere you can see the shadows are faked.

4 - I moved the sphere again here to show that Light Tracer isn't working with the shadows.

Can anyone please help me out with my shadowing problem. I thought light tracer also affected the way the shadows rendered out. I must be doing something wrong. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Try changing the shadow type to an area shadow. Light Tracer is for doing Global Illumination and radiosity. It really only simulates where shadows accumulate and how light is reflected/bounced.

This isn't a repply to your question, but I was wondering where did you get that font on the pictures, it's very cool.

Thanks.

I don't even understand what the problem is, looks like what I'd expect from MAX and two Omnis.

It sounds like others understand though so I'll leave it up to you Jo to decide if it'll be useful to elaborate on your problem :)
