Hi There

i really need some help with creating a thin rope or string.

The project I'm working on contains two ropes. the first one needs to be flexible as it needs to go through loops almost like a shoelace does.

the second rope will act like a handle tied to a loop, with knots on either side.

please help me as i'm still a junior in maya. please submit all tips and instructions step by step and in detail.

Thanks
Lindz

Try using Maya Hair. U can model ur curves then transform them into Dynamic curves, the start tweaking, and put some constaints if necessary. Or u can use soft bodies, and see if you can tweak up ur particles and make them behave.

Good Luck

Thanks for your advice

But can you please explain in detail how to do it?

mmmmm .. .. . I don't have a precise idea on what's the animation ur ropes gonna go throgh. But anyway u can build your basic curves that forms the rope. Then Hair > Make selected curves Dynamic. Tell maya when to start simulating the hair from, You can put some constraints to have control on your hair behavior, they are under Hair > Create constraint, Play with them a little, they are pretty easy. Adjust the stiffness and Damp as required. Cache the hair, then you can turn them into paint effects strokes from Hair > Assign Paint effects brush to hair. Or extrude surface along the dynamic curve.

The other way is to create soft body after modeling the curve (or geometry), Soft/Rigid bodies > Create Soft Body; Duplicate make copy soft, Hide non-soft, make non-soft a goal, wight 1. Then tweak it's goalPP values through the component editor. and apply required fields.

Hope this may help you more.

Check this out

Make Cable 1.0 (http://www.highend3d.com/maya/downloads/mel_scripts/dynamics/3835.html)

I'm not sure if it will work, but you might find some use out of it. And if you dont, its really fun to play with anyways! :bounce:
