Title: Rolex Submariner
Name: Neil Hillier
Country: USA
Software: (Other), mental ray, Photoshop
Hi, this is my first ever submision to this website. This project was modeled in Alias Studio Tools, and rendered with Mental Ray, with a little post-production in photoshop. I was attempting to generate a photorealistic image of a rolex watch, along the lines of a product visualization. I'm trying to break into the product viz industry, and would like critiques/critism on my modeling technique, and rendering skills. Basically, I'd like to know if this modeling quality is anywhere near the standard that would be expected from someone entering this industry. i.e. this should not really be evaluated for it's artistic content.
Any advice in general for working in product visualization would also be greatly appreciated.
Please check out the high resolution image for closer detail. Thanks!

As a modeller in the industry I can say your modelling is terrific:thumbsup:
I am not familiar with Alias Studio Tools but did you box model each piece or did you use splines, Sub D's?
Anyways I reckon you should work on the texture a little bit more, like add a ray trace to the metal and glass face and pick some nice reflections up, even use an HDRI
Mabey increase the bump map on your wood texture, can't tell if there's one on it already, so it brings out the fine grove details in the wood.
With Mental Ray try generating Caustics with your lighting setup, that way you will get nice little sharp flickers of light bouncing / reflecting onto the surface of the wood & watch.
Only you may need to brighten the light a bit more to get good caustics showing.
The render time will be huge with MRay but hey the results are worth it.
Hope this helps and Great Work!

Looks Damn fine to me :) The modeling is spot on and the render is really nice too. I would say that I agree with jbarr about the HDRI though, and also, I would say the shadows that run along the front edge of the strap look a little black, like there is no light reflected at all from the wood, this is a very minor point though :)
I don't know if Rolex make this type of watch with a "brushed metal" type strap? But that would be a good one to try, getting a little texture into the metal....
Excellent job, 4*s from me

 good modeling and texturing
I would like to see some reflections also! I would also like to see some specularity on the glass. Otherwise modeling is top notch! keep up the good work! woot

Thanks for the constructive comments.
jbar, Studio Tools is a NURBS modeling package that is used heavily in the auto industry, among others. It's actually owned by Autodesk now, so who knows if it'll remain in production. It's main strength is it's ability to produce class A surfaces for prototyping, other than that it is much the same as other packages such as Rhino. I have done some HDRI renders, which have more reflections on the glass etc., but I wanted to post a clean render here to have the surfaces evaluated. I often find that HDRI's do a good job of hiding bad geometry. You are correct about the wood, there is no bump. Originally I had it being reflective, as if it were coated with a clear laquer varnish. Basically, I have a bunch of renders, but didn't want to flood the thread with images. I haven't tried using caustics yet though, so that would be interesting.
mr-miley, yes there is a brushed metal version. I did attempt to produce a texture map in photoshop, but it ended up just looking messy. I think I'll have to purchase a nice texture disc to use for these projects. Any suggestions?
I really appreciate all the feedback!
