Best luck to everybody !

Lich kings are cool! Good luck.

Looks and sounds interesting. I like the look - reminds a bit of Azrael (SoulReaver) because he was also hiding his missing teeth-row (Unterkiefer) with some cloth

Waiting for updates :)

Look very nice and scary.... maybe a little gore... some decay flesh... but since he is the king.. so been dead quite a while... all flesh rotten.. dunno... He just seem a bit clean IMHO... but very kewl model.... love how smoothly the bandage blend with the skull!!:wip:

Very nice crown. :D

Joel Hooks
03-12-2002, 10:08 PM
Nice looking model so far.

I'd shove that crown down on his head a bit more. it would give it a heavier feel.

You know the band Marduk?.....they have skulls with crows on their covers.....But any way it Rules! Really cool model so far!!!

Fetus23

That crown looks really nice.....beautiful model.

Marduk is also the name of The 12th planet which was discovered and named by the summerians around 6000 BC...it was recently discovered by NASA in 1984 they called it planet X.
Our planet earth is in much danger because of this "stray" planet.

hmm...

back to the undead....Hope to see more of that decorative style on the crown through out the model.

Like it so far !!
Maybe you could give him a pingoo skin over his shoulders as a sign of his royalty :D

One day, Pingoos will rule the world :buttrock:

El Tonio
03-13-2002, 01:08 PM
Oh, ok a serious one :

Right now, his crown won't stay on his head if he moves . Maybe it would be nice a bit lower, more on his forehead .

Keep it good .

Hey Joe,

When I look at your skeleton, it's like seeing some wip images I made last year...Are you modelling the skeleton from the beast & monsters Manual From AD&D by any chances?

As you can see my icon, I already made it whitout the crown and some other little differences...

http://www.3dluvr.com/paranoy2k/Htm/Skeleton.htm

I can't wait to see more...hehe! Funny feeling I got here :)

Great work by the way!

Joebount
03-14-2002, 10:17 AM
:o Arg, let's say we exactly have the same insporation on this one ! arggggg ! lol

I'll try to do something a bit different, especially in the details (god is in the details ! :) )

BTW, really nice pic you did !

Stay tuned, update very soon

03-14-2002, 01:38 PM
That's great! =)
A lot of details on the crown and now it's fiting really much better on the skull. Good job with the wrinkles on the bandages too, they seem to lay pretty naturally. :wip:

Nice, I'm diggin the necklace. I like the wrinkles on the neck "wrap" but maybe they could be a bit more defined. Like places where it folds and overlaps (doubles up).

Wow, maybe he´s undead but he´s got a really neat fashion taste! Very, very nice skull, just for experiment, have you tried lowering the eyebrow (i mean, to frown) in order to get an angry look? BTW it´s great as it´s now, empty eyesockets are always scary.

henry
03-15-2002, 01:37 AM
truly good work! keep it up!!

KOryH
03-15-2002, 02:09 AM
Wow!
That is looking Great! the detailing is supurb.
It reminds me of a quick painting I did a couple of weeks ago. For an other forum. Close Huh? You know what they say about great minds.
Keep up the excellent work.

Joebount
03-15-2002, 08:33 PM
I really love your lich KOryH, especially the mood and the lightning !:)

I didn't work a lot on it today, but here is a small update : if you have any suggestion for the central part, don't hesitate ! The arm are not the final one, I will refine more the fabric.

The skull is not finished, and I will make some tries on the eyes sockets

Taoizm
03-15-2002, 08:36 PM
maybe a bit more variation in the cloth hem. Unless this is a fresh Lich with a good taylor I'd expect the cloth to be a bit more ragged on the edges.

Wiro
03-16-2002, 03:48 AM
Wow, that's a really nice model! I love the cloth wrinkles especially those on the arms. I'm looking forward to seeing the whole body.

His expressionless eyesockets make him look nice and eerie but maybe you could experiment with deforming the skull so it really looks demonic? And to set it apart from the AD&D influences ;)

Keep it up!

Wiro

AnimBot
03-16-2002, 10:25 AM
Yes I agree with everyone else here it looks very very nice. I'm wondering though are you worried about proportions? I know alot of people here model peice by peice. I just think that's difficult in getting proportions correct but that may just be me. The proof is in the pudding I guess and this pudding looks mighty tasty.

PixelPusher
03-16-2002, 11:08 AM
Heh ... Hello ADnD Monster Manual. Actually it looks more like the the liches from the Diety and Demi-gods books. They are gods who roam the streets in search of vengeance on whom ever is out after dark, the city is from the Faffard and the Grey Mouser series. I cant remember the name.

Very good model BTW. I am just itching to see the end result.

Teyon
03-16-2002, 01:27 PM
Lookin' darn good there! I can't wait for the end product!!

Joebount
03-16-2002, 07:32 PM
Thanks for the comments guys !!! It's very stimulating !

Arild, will you participate to this challenge ? (if yes, I give up : the pablototichnanostipenfellahneox team, Matt Clarck and you ... :D ) I will try to deform the skull after I'm done with the upper part (still a lotta work to do !)

I cannot find a good clothing solution, so, I will work on them later (Don't worry Tony, he has no tailor, and his clothe will spend 250 years in a dark place... ;) )

For the moment, I don't worry to much on the proportions (I know I should... I'm a bad boy !) but I tried to model the skull parts the more exactly possible.

Well, here is an update of a belt (Do you like it ? Don't hesitate to give your opinion about the design, suggestions...)

<self promotion> BTW : I'm looking for a job in september, so don't hesitate to mail me ! </self promotion>

Edin
03-16-2002, 07:42 PM
wow I absolutely love this model :-)

With the right textring this will look perfect. As for your most recent update, my suggestion is that you shrink the belt a bit(take out a few links). It seem to wide around the waist.

El Tonio
03-16-2002, 07:49 PM
I don't like the belt : it's a bit too large and the "runes" engraved on it are not believable enough . Maybe you could go and search for exemples of old languages for an inspiration .

A second (friendly) critic would be about the chest armor : to my knowledge, all armors are closed at the heart level for protection . So maybe you should close it for his sake !

Good continuation !

Wiro
03-16-2002, 07:51 PM
Haha, no I don't think I'll have the time to participate this month. And if I do it won't be with a very complex model. You're doing just fine here yourself anyway, so you don't have much to be afraid of ;)

Wiro

Wouah Joebount!!! Very Great Stuff!

your model is better and better!
nice details...You changed the eyes! it's good but it was nice before too...(l'air en colère est bien mais l'air "dépouvu de vie et de sentiment" avant etait pas mal aussi)
He seems just too much Rigid...but you will probably break this impression when you will put the bones!

Very good work!

Bravo la France!!! :) :) :)

Jaidek
03-17-2002, 06:57 PM
Wow! Really looking nice! Just my personal opinion, I liked the belt with the multiple runes on it, any reason why it changed in this newer version? But all in all, definately BUTTER! :D hehe.

ARG !!! IT'S NO RUNE, JUST DECORATION !!!! I will make a version especially for you guys with runes everywhere !!!! ;)

bibi5000
03-19-2002, 06:02 AM
I'll sign that, too.

The model is too symmetrical, though.
But still VERY good :applause:
AND good lighting (I've seen too much of this GI crap; done it too much myself ;)).

Very nice lighting.... do you know where I can find a tutorial/s on lighting... It seem to be an art that is really hard to learn =).... (are you intrested in making a tutorial...)

Joebount
03-19-2002, 04:49 PM
DarkSky : for the lightning tutorial, try books about photography or movies ; they will explain you how to create natural lightning... for the tutorial, I would say no, because I'm not a specialist and I don't have a lotta time. My light setup is not really complicated : one warm (orange) spotlight that cast shadows above the character, one cold (blue) point light on the left (half the intensity of the first one) and 30 point lights all around the character (the whole intensity of the 30 lights is 3, so it's 0.1 by lights). The shadows are also really important : sun project shadows which are very sharp where a neon light would project soft shadows etc. I hope it helps you.

bibi5000 : I'm currently destroying that symmetricality, adding more details, etc.

Thewheels : I dunno if I'll rescale the hands now, maybe when all the details are done (I agree on the fact they appear to be a bit too small).

And for all of you : thanks for the C&C. I'm currently working on a bill to have 48 hours per day; the revolution has begun !

It's kinda hard to tell if the hands are too small because there's no skin to beef up the look. Same with the arms (no skin and muscles).

By the way, I like how your tearin him up now... keep goin with that.

Joebount
03-20-2002, 08:07 PM
hey mr aga (amiga's man ?), I didn't say it was my own design (look at sigma's post in my thread, you'll understand). Nevertheless, I try to give it a special style --> It's not the final version; My inspiration come from AD&D :D

03-21-2002, 05:07 PM
top-notch.
maybe you should scrap some of those rectangular-armor-padding-thingy's he's wearing, to add to the wearing & tearing of his cloth.

Danko
03-21-2002, 05:50 PM
Yep! I agree with parallax.
Very good job! you can try adding scars and dirt or broking that shoulder pads, but I guess lo left that to the end stage. Btw, isn't the head (skull) maybe a bit big in proportion to the rest of the body?. Maybe it's just me so don't care ;) Great overall anyway. Keep on!

its comiing along great. maybe the hands as mentioned can be just a tad bigger and the the shoulders, the bones under the armor that connect to the cage, a bit lower. appart from that, I like it.

is he going to hold something in his hands, like a cepter or an insignia of power?

Joebount
03-22-2002, 07:58 PM
yup, he will have something in his hands (I still have to figure out what :) ). I've rescaled the head. update tommorow :)

Hiya Joe, first off awesome model, second I have a question, can we see the alpha map, (if used that is) of the holes in the garment? I'm planning on something similar, but I really need to made it look like torn cloth..

cheers

Joebount
03-22-2002, 10:44 PM
Ok ok ok, I didn't wait ! here is an update, a ton of little tweakings : scales, more details, the clothes have been retouched...

No alpha maps (or mapping of any kind have been used, soooo ... :) ).

Here is a darker mood, I hope you like it !

Joel Hooks
03-22-2002, 10:59 PM
I dislike the dark it obscures your neat model. :)

Pancreas
03-23-2002, 02:33 PM
Mmmhhh perhaps "Bonny" feels better in the darkness, but it makes hard to distinguish its lovely details... The model is great but i think it´d look much better in another pose not so static, rigid (he looks dead!) Perhaps summoning the five hells of Atumnia, waving his hands, the robe flapping, glowing eyes, thunders.. argh!

Lorenzo
03-23-2002, 06:31 PM
Just something to say.
Mets une lumière plus uniforme, ou essaie une globale illumination.
les détails de la robe et des bras sont vraiment cool.
j'espère que tu vas l'assigner, pour lui donner une autre pose.
Mais j'aime bien l'idée du squelette.

Nice work, lollllllll:cool:

Wraith
03-23-2002, 06:31 PM
Let there be light!!! :) Have to agree bout the light comments, you are losing so much detail by putting such dark lighting in the render. Like the model though, have you decided what to put in the hands? I am thinking maybe a sceptor (is that how its spelt :)) as the character has a kind of royal look bout it. Keep the updates flowing :)

I think it's a great job, man. If I wanted to be a pain, I guess I'd like to see a little brighter light in front of him but that's just because I'vve gotten used to staring at all that detail. Lit as it is now, it's pretty moody...maybe a soft red somewhere?

uh uh, not a big update, just a quick material test (I know, no texturing for the final version, don't worry :) ). 100% procedural and 100% scanline. around 230K polys. C&C are welcome :)

Those fingers are the only think that disturb me. So puny like little girl hands :) They need XZ scaling! Plump!

Coloring looks nice.

Looking stunning!

It's a shame those colors are not for the final entry!
Just one thing, maybe you could make his cape model like it is struck by a heavy wind blow...make it look evil!

Keep it coming!

Hi Joe,

I'm really impressed by the quality of that character.
I love the modeling and lighting in the previous images.

As for the pose you made with that dead man holding his stick, i would say it is not really explicit. I mean that you can not really say that he's posing, because it seems that only his left arm moved to that stick. Maybe you should try to make him move much more, having an explicit movement, telling a precise situation, even without being obliged to show other elements.

I hope you understand what i mean. I think that if you manage to do that, you'll give more life to your character, and this would be marvelous when you see the visual realism you're able to achieve !

Keep going, i'm one of your fans !

I agree Toma,
It seems very static. Especially with a character that has no eyes, brows or mouth (really), all the expression and life will have to come from the pose. It will make a huge difference. Right now it looks like something you might see at a museum :)

just my 2cents

Joebount
03-28-2002, 12:40 AM
yup guys, I totaly agree with you, I gotta do something about the pose, that's why I'm asking for ideas ! :D It's much more easier (I didn't say it's easy !) to do that when you have muscles and flesh :D.

Hey Joe... Think ETHEREAL.

Yeah make this character somewhat transparent. I am not sure if its a violation of the texturing rule but making it semi transparent will add to it a bit. Maybe even a slight glow as well. =)

Looks great.

hey Joe:

let him stand firmly on the ground (like with kinda wide stance) on a rock or a hilltop, then make him hold the staff high in front of him, as if he's going to cast a major spell from the tip of the staff! All this to support him hordes of skeletons in battle...

Add some wind that makes his clothes move (although it's a still shot), maybe some lightning and thunder in the background (maybe making the light from the lightningbolts reflect on him, maybe somewhat over exposed)

and make that staff glod and sparkle, building up energy for the blast!

Yeah! Come on! Go! You can do it (quote from Waterboy)

Ehhh, OK, well I love this shit...

But then again it's supposed to be WIP... Well I just saw this mean guy before my inner eye... ;)

03-28-2002, 06:07 PM
Well well well ... here is just a try, I think it's better, tell oncle Joe what you think about it.
I'll add more details and even a background if I have the time.

PS : epatnor, you should be ashamed to like this movie ;) lol

wow. very nice. the only unfinished thing looks to be the base of the staff. i want this thing life size so that I can hang it on my door and frighten the neighborhood children. :D

Not to be a pest or anything, but dont the challenges require you to start from scratch? Your picture icon already shows your character in completed form?

Is this something you have finished previously?

Just curious

Taoizm

Skyros, head back to the earlier pages, and it shows that he's done everything from scratch. He changed his icon during this challenge.

Hey Joe... Hmm.. Fingers .. so.. thin... :waits for claws: http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gifhttp://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gifhttp://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gif - kidding!

You need to give his body a better flow than straight up and down. The arms are looking cool, but the shoulders, hips and legs need some attention!

Joebount
03-28-2002, 08:50 PM
Well, uh ... better flow ... it's quite hard because he's just standing here, waiting for his UPS' delivery ... I'll see if I can chenge what you pointed out.

thanks anyway

PS : I thik I'll do a version with claws somedays .... :D

I don't understand the UPS?

i actually think skyros is right - i remember coming to this thread earlier when joe hadn't even made the arms yet on his wip OR the main body, but the picture by his name showed arms...

it's a fine piece non-the-less

ARGGGGGGGGGG

It's an original piece of work, I didn't take any parts from previous works ! And I started after the beggining of the challenge, not before ! I have 100 Mo of Maxfile to proove what I say !

GRRRRRRRRRRRR

PS : Thx lowdown for the position, I see what you mean, I'll see if I'll change (reallly dunno at the moment)

Teyon
03-29-2002, 12:45 AM
Well I don't remember it having arms until after Joe gave it a pair. About the same time, I remember his avatar changed to show the new look. I'm behind ya 100% buddy and I love the model!

i love that model Joe...it's amazing work!!!
i follow you're thread from the moment you start.its rocks!
i think you're not a cheater but simply a good modeler...........but maybe this is the problem!!!!if you know you're not so there's no problem.
it's very good model that's very detailed and beautiful..:wip: :wip: :wip: :wip:

Dont sweat it Captain Bount :) we all know that your not cheating. Bad ass model though.

Try throwing a more dynamic (I'm gonna kick your ass) pose in the next picture. Might look cool.

about wip. as I can remember, the initial avatar icon was a close up of the head and has changed *during* the competion. so everything is perfectly ok imho =)

keep going Joebount, its coming along great!

cool stuff, I really like it.
regarding the pose: the camera angle you chose for the last image (from below) might be more dramatic than a straight shot, but unfortunately you focus on the 'plain' areas of your model with all the lovely details far away...

And maybe you should try more 'bending', make his right hand into a fist, make hime crouch a little bit, anything more dynamic. But then, this is the fun part of modeling, you might want to keep it for the end ;)

I third that :D Defintely a more dynmic pose with the body bending a bit maybe to show off a bit more of the detail, but also giving some life to 'em !!

Yo Joe,

My suggestion for composition would be this... Sit his ass down in a thrown. Give him a bit of a thrown room if not just a thrown with a wall and floor. :)

Maybe make him look lifeless, a bit like a tortured soul type. :)

Hey Joe,
Could we see the hands again? The camera lens you are using might be distorting them, but they look a little too small. Otherwise, this is my first time on this thread. You are doing a great job. ;)

I love it, I saw it in the begining, no cheating.
From all I know of AD&D, not a lot, but I have seen tons of artwork- Lich Kings hold clubs. They whack people on the side of the head, they are like the mafia, they get a group of 4-5 and go door-to-door knocking people's heads. I have a picture of them walking down an alley going in doors, very cool looking, like yours. It is shiney, I like shiney things.
