Merterkin has it about right. Save your 7.0 scene as a Maya Ascii file (.ma)

Open your .ma with notepad. The top few lines shuold look like this:

//Maya ASCII 7.0 scene
//Name: YourScene.ma
//Last modified: Sat, Apr 22, 2006 01:57:51 PM
requires maya "7.0";
currentUnit -l centimeter -a degree -t film;
fileInfo "application" "maya";
fileInfo "product" "Maya Unlimited 7.0";
fileInfo "version" "7.0";
fileInfo "cutIdentifier" "200507192211-654274";
fileInfo "osv" "Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (Build 3790)\n";

Change all the green '7.0' to '6.0'. Resave the .ma, and now you should be able to open the file in Maya 6. (Assumnig you arent using any plugins/nodes that are only available in Maya 7)

one thing, do i need change the "Mayatomr" attributes which in Maya 7 are " 7.0.1.14m - 3.4.5.2" while in Maya 6, they are" 6 .XXXX.XXXX.....".????

if the file doesn't open in maya 6, then it might pay to change them. otherwise just changing the header information should be fine.

HOWEVER it does not always work. I tried with a 6.5 file a friend of mine had (I use 6.0.1) and did the ASCII trick, but because of certain settings in the scene, it would not open at all. So it's gamble. But I have heard it does work in most cases.
