View Full Version : Model clean-up: How do I get rid of n-gons, triangles, and "five-poly-vertices".
White Knight 05-17-2006, 08:57 AM I'm cleaning up my model a bit but I find it really hard to get rid of triangles, n-gons and "five-poly-vertices"(poles).
Is here anything written upon this subject? Any tutorials concering this?
I know it's not always necassary to have only quads but sometimes you see these perfect-looking models containing all quads. What are the tricks?
How do they do it??

Removing triangles is not that hard. I don't know about N-gons.
Anyway, for an in depth discussion on this topic you should check out this thread:

AND on this site there are a lot of usefull tips and some videos about this topic:

Hope I was of any help :)

There's nothing perfect about a model becasue it only contains quads. Don't waste any time trying to achive only quads, it's a minor technicality. There's nothing wrong with a few triangles, but n-gons aren't good since all apps don't support them.
Triangles do not always cause smoothing problems or creases depending on how and where you use them.

I totally agree, triangles and pole verts are very very helpful in places. Just dont model the entire thing with pole verts or tris.

..unless you're doing a model for a game engine of course, in which case it all has to be conveted to triangles anyway, so there's even less point in getting upset about it.
