Hmmm I thought maybe this one was going to use the new R16000 processor, but it's running Intel Itaniums.... Hmm.. Nice too, but the R16000 would have been nicer ;)

The Altix is just an Origin 3k with different color plastic skins. SGI was very smart with the whole brick method of expandablity in this system. It provided them with an extremly adaptable/modular architecture that they could pretty much plugin in different processors with just a different brick but keep all the other systems the same(backbone, graphics, networking etc...). I am sure the R16k will pop up in the origin 3k series in the next couple months. The first R16k that they put in the fuel only have a 2-4 meg L2 cache. The ones that go in the 3k boxes have an 8 meg L2 cache.
