View Full Version : BlendShape - Cube Into A Sphere?

Hi Guys

OK i've done a search and there are lots of blend shape questions, but I can't seem to find the advice I need in any of the answers, so...

Very basically, I want to blend a cube into a sphere.

In the file I'm working on right now, I've created a brand new polysphere and polycube. Sphere has 7 x 7 subdivisions (making 44 verts) and cube has 3 x 3 x 2 subdivisons (making 44 verts). so they have the same number of verts each, which, as far as I'm aware is all they need to be able to blend correctly.

however when one is made into the blend shape of the other (either way round) and the slider is moved up to 1 then the whole mesh completely deforms in a crazy way, goes out of scale and basically does not work.

i have a feeling it may be something to do with 'vert order'?, and that there is a way of correcting this.

could anyone helpful out there do a quick test setup with my above parameters to see what I mean, and explain the reasons behind this issue, and ways to solve it?

Thanks guys!

Hi Doc Evil Bear

Like this, do you mean?:

just take any divisions of cube and make duplicate that cube

and go to deform> CreateSclpt deform

and scale the sclpt upto ur cube become round

then del history

make blend shape

that it

Atwooki - yes exactly like that! Well, not exactly.... not cube into sphere... more like rectangular brick shape into baked bean shape... but the same basic thing yep!

How did you make that clip?

sreedhar3d - I will give that technique a go and get back to you!

Further to that (to lessen hard edges on the blendshaped sphere) use xyShrinkWrap on
your new sphere along with a hi-res 'target' sphere of the same volume as the original cube,
and then create the blendShape :)

sreedhar3d - that technique doesn't give a smooth enough sphere for what i need mate - more of a popcorn shaped object....

atwooki - thanks for the script link - i've also come across this one:

is this any better or worse or the same thing?

thanks guys!

Yeah, Fit Morph's a goodie too :)

Thats really cool of you thanks mate, i don't understand how you made that final spere so smooth though, when the original cube has very crisp edges.

found your animated blendshape node, no prbs, but animated vertice average... hmmmm can't find it...

could you gimme a brief run thru of how you got to this stage, if you have nothing better to do right now..

thanks a lot, i'm getting somewhere with my file but not quite there yet..

You don’t even need a blendshape for a simple cube to sphere. A cube is basically a sphere. Just select the cube and apply Smooth command. In the channel box animate the continuity. And apply division for the desired smoothness.

Edit: Actually you want more than a simple cube to sphere. Then just model a copy of the smoothed object without modifying its topology and blend shape should work without any problems.

Emil - Thanks dude - That continuity slider ios a bit of a godsend, I think I've got a handle on this now! Thanks to all for their support and advices...

Still a little unsure what animated vertice average means though if anybody can explain it?
