View Full Version : Meerkat character setup
ChrisN 05-16-2006, 07:24 AM Hi, i've done a couple of setups but all of them has been either a biped or a quad.. Now when I'm laying out design on how to rig a meerkat i've run in to the problem (or least I think it's a problem), that this creature should be able to both have a biped and quad.. setup. What are your experiences on that type of setup.

Lots of IK/Fk setup to make the rig as robust as possible.

Use two setups?

As already said, two setups is an option, then the only problem is the transition if the character goes from one to the other. If it's just a shot or two, no problem, especially if the character doesn't have to do anything like transition from a biped walk to a quad run.
Another option is one rig with biped legs cheated to be more "quadlike" and extra blendshapes to help you in the deformations as you go from one to the other....almost like having a "quad mode" and a "biped mode" because the deformation requirements between the two are different enough that it's a pain to get it to work.
The best thing is look at the requirements for the shots. If it's more quad then lean toward quad with biped one-offs and vice versa.
Hope that helps.

Hi guys..
i want to take this thread as oppurtunity to ask you guys question..
What you do differently in quad rig which is not in biped rig..
not like bone and topology changes but control changes like i think
Hips controler should be diffrent and way knee setup in biped is lot in differ than quad.
All guys please contribute to thread about your difference way you handle biped and quad rig
Thanks
ps:hope Christoffer you don't mind my only purpose is to get the difference and then use it inbip/quad two in one rig

quad: Some general things that tend to be different (not rules, just things learned over time)
-no foot roll, heel lift/raise instead
-ball roll
-joint placement is different, heel and ankle are off the ground (more part of the leg which is why foot roll doesn't make a lot of sense)
-stretch control on upleg loleg and ankle/foot because you sometimes need to be able to "break" the angles that the ik handle gives you. Like when a dog sits. Can be a really tough pose.
-nice to have
-knee aim offset
- hip control (like a clav)
-foot splay
Quads can be tough it would be great to hear what others have found....
