Im thinking of getting together with some friends and puting together a game demo using 'Game Maker'

The program is used in their school and seems relativly easy to use. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience using it? I have looked at screen shots of games people have made with it, and was suprised to se how bad the graphics were for most of them. I was affraid the engine was limited to 50 colors or something, but i replaced some demo games graphics with photographs and the game still ran smoothly! so i guess i have 2 questions...

1. why do all games made with this program look awful? is it from limits to the engine i havent run into yet? or low skill level of artists?

2. I'm also interested to know if this program allows for AVI. (or other movie files) to be played as cut scenes.

If it all comes together i want to do something that has a pre-rendered look to it with high poly 3D cut scene movies. Something like an old school final fantasy game or original legend of Zelda. anyway, I appreciate any info available!

Moste of the games look awful, cause most of the "programmers"(no real programming involved) are kids, who seen gamemaker somewhere and started doing games, without having any idea about grafics. Gamemaker doesnīt realy have a grafic limitation, if you donīt want to do a 3D game. If you got some artitst skills, you will be able, to do hmmm... lets say a game with the grafiks of 1998 or so...

But donīt be afrait, its a good start.

Hope My Answers Helps either :) :

1.As TheGameMaker said most of them are Kids.Make Sure to use GameMaker 6.1 which support DirectX 9+ .

2.Yes,you can use AVIs,But this feature is not Complete yet.(e.g. you can see the Mouse Cursor on screen). I know there is a DLL plug-in in it's Forum to make it right with more format Support.

I absolutely love Game Maker. My goal is not to create commercial games but work on AI simulations. As long as you keep in mind that it is a sprite-based game engine, you should be fine.

If some of the demo games others have made look awful, please realize that is only a limitation of the person's skill and or commitment. One of the nice things about GM is that you can quickly prototype games and alot of people do that with their graphics, with the idea that they'll finish the sprites later.

I think it's scripting language, workflow, and features are superb. If you want to do 3D, though, you need a 3D game engine. GM's strength is 2D and 2.5D.

Besides, you can try it for free to access many features, but it didn't take me long to plunk down the measly $20 for the extra features.
